RED posted up their first example of moving footage from EPIC (ISO 800. 17-50 RED RPZ at T2.8 REDCODE 50 (just over 5:1 compression) 5ms read-reset). It was shot with "Magic Motion". The color has been left flat, from the camera (i.e. no grade applied).
It is noted that this is very early in development. It can be assumed that improvements will be made from this point

All of that being said...I wonder how long until similar technology will trickle down to elsewhere in the market. I'd love to have a point of comparison (i.e., what that same scene would look on an Alexa, a 7D, or an F35) to really get a feel for what's going on.
Taking a peek at the .mov in FCP and Color, there still seems to be a lot of information despite compression. The histogram makes me happy.
It seems this is basically giving more control of when things roll off and when things blow to the DP in post, rather than choosing to preserve highlights or shadows while shooting. After thinking about it and reading some from respect folk on another list, I think it will definitely have an application for me. I'm also not finding the motion to be noticeably impeded, but there is another setting - More Normal Motion Blur - which is supposed to reproduce blur even more naturally.
