HDMI monitor

Would anybody recommend a good 1920x1080 HD monitor (great buy for the money) you have found that has an HDMI output (to go with my Intensity Pro). Since I can't afford a proper broadcast monitor at this time, something under $1000.

What kind of details should I be looking for?

Thanks. I will call one of the registered dealers here and check out that option for my 20" LCD (not HD) Apple Cinema Display.

Switching from editing in SD, I'm currently using Intensity Pro with my old JVC SD monitor to down convert from HD to 16:9, but the artifacting makes it difficult to really see what you are editing.

An editor told me that there are many commercial monitors out there that have HDMI inputs that could give me straight 1920x1080 HD. Brands he mentioned are Sony Sharp LG Panasonic that are all good makes.

Does anybody have any good experience with this option to compare?

What am I looking for in such a monitor?

Without a doubt. Buy a Panasonic Plasma 42 inch. Yes it's consumer but it is actually preferred by friends who I know in the business that professionally color grade.

Thanks. I will check that out. Anything 1920x1080 that's a little smaller? Preference between Plasma, LED, LCD?

Enrico,
I use a Matrox box with my Apple cinema display as an output/screening monitor and it is about as accurate as you will get for the money for my second monitor, I use a 32' LG Led 1080p/120Hz LCD TV and since I shoot with AVCHD on I also use it for screening with a WDTV unit on another of the four HDMI inputs. The big screen is great and lots of space and easy to look at even after a long day in the room, not everyone's cup of tea however I like it. But in all honesty when I go to the "post houses' to get stuff graded and have a look at the "real thing" it is evident that you get what you pay for at $5,000 and up. So if you are looking for an editing monitor and as close as you can get for a reasonable buck, I would suggest an Apple Cinema Display and one of the Matrox boxes.

I totally agree I had an older Panasonic 42" that was actually a 720p monitor. About 2 years ago I got a 1080p 50" Panasonic and we use it every day. It works perfectly. Great monitor at wonderful price.
Last year we added a MOTU v4HD interface. It is a wonderful combination.

Thank you for your feedback. I am presently shopping and looking onto all those options. Currently, I am using Intensity Pro to down convert HD to my SD monitor. But does Intensity Pro work well as an sdi converter going out of my mac pro into 1080p monitors and at all the frame rates?

Due to the high cost of good HD broadcast monitors (up to $10,000), this is presently a challenge upgrading from SD to HD. The down conversion w Intensity Pro is functional but the artifacting... has taken all the pleasure away from HD. My Mac Pro set up uses two 20' Apple Cinema Displays. The thought of getting a Matrox MXO is tempting, but it's also very nice editing, custom arranging FCP between the 2 displays. It was great having that extra 3rd JVC monitor in SD to get a sense of the end product.

With HDMI Intensity Pro interface, the consumer monitors look very interesting. The 32" LG Led 1080p/120Hz LCD TV also has 24p cinema (which I think means I can edit 23.98 as well as 29.97) and about $500, half the the price of the Matrox. Gonna check out the 42" Plasma Panasonic which in Canada I think is close to the cost of the Matrox (my budget's leaning closer to the $500 if possible). I really appreciate the input you've given me so far and welcome more feedback if you have some to offer. It really helps with the search.

A few more questions in this search: Is 1:1 pixel mapping, ie. "PC mode" essential? Is there a preference between 60 and 120Hz consumer tv's? And does the "cinema mode" usually mean it will be good to edit in 24P mode? I appreciate any help on this quest.

A good HD Broadcast monitor doesn't need to cost $10,000. You can get Flanders Scientific 17" model for $2500. 24" model for $5000. Panasonic models for the same price range...JVC too.

I can't afford that now. Just trying to establish my priorities (for 30p and 24P editing) to make the best decision for under $1000.

I just received an HDTV monitor (Sony 32"1080P), set it up with HDMI through my previously owned Intensity Pro (not unfortunately the Decklink Studio you are suggesting Shane). Since this is my first HD project moving from SD, I also discovered Blackmagic Intensity Pro doesn't support 30P. This was confirmed talking with the Blackmagic tech support people on the phone. This is a serious setback since my FCP sequence is 30P. Has anyone encountered this issue and worked out something? Any help would be appreciated.

Is there a preference between the Decklink Studio and Matrox MXO2? I'm using a Mac Pro Quad Core with a couple of 20" Apple Cinema Displays and of course the HDTV monitor. What is the most effective HDMI solution for monitoring here, and can the 20" Cinema Display be used for 1920x1080 or should I go primarily with the HDTV monitor?
