HD WMV's on an XBox 360?

Hey All,

I know there have been several posts on this subject, and I’ve gone back and read through those. I didn’t really find the answer to my specific question. From what I can tell, it appears that what I’d like to do is possible. Anyone tried this and can give me any hints or helpful advice?

I’d like to make a WMV file in an HD format that I can put onto a USB 2.0 device. Then I’d like to connect my USB device to my Xbox 360 and play back my HD video.

Is this possible? If so, what are the format settings I should be using for creating this HD WMV file? Any other things I should be concerned about? Is there a better way to do this (I know I can connect my PC, but I’d rather not)?

Oops, here's another question I failed to ask: What about rendering surround sound audio? I noticed that if I try to render a 1080i file that the default format includes stereo audio. I'd like to include surround sound. How do I do that?

BTW - I made the assumption that I want the 1080-60i format (1440x1080 29.97 fps). If that's wrong, please correct me.

Thanks for the help :)

The XBox can playback 1080/30p video of either h.264 or WMV. Just make sure you render in progressive format as 1920x1080/30p, with bitrate less than 10mbps, and you should be in business.

As for the sound, the HDV format is stereo, so that's why you get stereo. You need an AVCHD camera to capture 5.1 Surround audio.

Ah - your answer helped. I realized I was not setting it to WMV (Duh!). Once I did that, the 1080i Surround 5.1 was an option. Cleared that up - thanks.

But that lead me to another question. I'm trying to render this in SD as well. When I render out the DVD Architect audio file I see 2 choices for AC3 – Studio and Pro. Which should I be using, and can you explain the difference between these?

Thanks :)
