Hd Wmv

I was playin' around with the render settings, and was trying to export a small piece as a WMV 9 file (HD 720p).... I'm able to do it as a normal Windows Media AVI file, but tried to do the following:

6 Mbps HD 720-30p Video

Audio: 384 Kbps, 48,000 Hz, 24 Bit, Stereo, WMA9 Pro.
Video: 29.97 fps, 1280x720, WMV V9 CBR Compression, Smoothness 90.
Use this setting for high-quality HD video playback from a local hard drive.

I get the following error:

An error occurred while creating the media file.
The request is not enabled for this device.

I'm using Vegas Movie Studio Platinum (licensed copy)... and am wondering if even though it gives this option, if this version can not do that output... or if it's a hardware restriction from my machine... or if it's some other problem. My machine is capable of 'viewing' HD wmv files (i downloaded and whatched a bunch from Windows HD Trailer site)

Sure...
OS: WinXP Home, Service Pack 2

Hardware:
Intel Pentium 4, 3GHz
MB: Asus P5GD1
1GB Ram (DDR)
MainHD: 120gig SATA
Saving it to secondary HD: 80gig SATA
Video: ATI Radeon X300 (256meg)... (although my invoice shows as an RX-300TD)
Firewire card (not sure, think it's a Pyra or something... either way it works for capturing video from my cam)

Hmmm... I just tried it with Vegas 6c, and it worked. The Movie Studio version should be the same, as far as that goes...if the preset is there, it should be available for use.

I have had problems in the past with WMV, but only when trying to use the "Advanced" codec in the video section.

I was hoping it would break, so I could say it was a codec thing...but mayeb it is a Studio version thing.

It 'could' just a Studio prob.. I just haven't had alot of time to get into troubleshooting... hopefully the tech support will be able to supply an answer at some point. In the 'help guide', I did notice there were alot of things that Vegas 6c supported, that my Studio (build 432 or something), did not. For some reason I just thought the WMV file size would be better than the AVI.

Well, my 4 minute footage (the Sunset I posted a few weeks ago) went from 8 MB as a 480x270 WMV to about 126MB as a 1280x720 WMV.

I guess size DOES matter. As well as datarate.

Yeah... but while experimenting... I had a 30 second bit of footage, when rendered as windows media AVI (720, 30p), was about 120megs. So I'm thinking the WMV does have better compression (considering you were able to do alot longer at the same size), that's why I'm gonna try to get it fixed up on my setup. I also exported on at 720-60i, but I think i like the 30p results better... i prefer the motion blur than interlacing (for viewing on my pc/monitor anywayz... maybe a diff. case if it were viewed on a tv screen)

I'll keep you guys posted if I figure out what the problem is (or if I find out it's a restriction on my software package).

**UPDATE**

Submitted this issue to sony's tech support... dunno how long it will take for them to get back though.

Interesting thing... I tried launching my trial version of Vegas 6.0c and it WORKS. I was able to output the WMV v9 (720-30p video). So maybe this is a compression only available to Vegas 6.0, and not Movie Studio Platinum. Also interesting is that when I purchased/unlocked the Movie Studio, I gained MPG access with the demo version of Vegas 6.0c.

Any rate, if anyone cares to see the results, I posted the video to my site. This was the first time using the camera, so my shots/settings aren't the greatest. Shot with the Sony HC1. There may also be better settings.. but i used the template for rendering the HD 720-30p, and set the quality to 'Best' and 'Sharpest'.

I'll let you guys know when/if I hear back from Sony.

UPDATE - PROBLEM FIXED

Hey guys... figured out what the problem is, well, actually found the answer within Sonymediasoftwares forums. Here's what I found:

The WMV HD templates are all for surround or 24 bit audio. Movie Studio 6 Platinum does not support either of these audio formats, the maximum is 16 bit stereo.

Workaround: Create your own custom templates that use the Windows Media Audio 9 codec (not Pro).

1. Select the HD template in Render As and click Custom
2. Click the Audio tab
3. Select "Windows Media Audio 9" from the Format dropdown
4. Choose a bitrate/sample rate/channels setting from the Attributes dropdown. Set it to one of the settings at the bottom of the list for the best results.
5. Type in a new name in the Template edit field, update the description, and click the Save button (looks like a floppy disk).
6. Click OK to return to the Render As dialog.

Now you can use that template for your HD renders.

Just tried it out, and it works. :)

Also just got my bonus material delivered today from Sony including the "HDV: What you NEED to Know" booklet... the name on the cover looks familiar.
