HD? who needs it...

I actually think Blu-ray is here to stay. Brian said something about Ipod esque devices playing HD video. This could very well be true, but we are not taking into consideration picture quality/extras vs file size. Blu-ray's main advantages are the fact that it is "tangible"( its a physical copy that you can store and collect) vs solid state and Online Streaming. Yes, one can argue that the solid state and the HDD files are physical copies of the content, but with the DRM's, etc. Its just nowhere near practical for both storage and collection.

One of the main factors that made DVD's win over Laserdiscs was its size for storage and sharing. Everyone could bring a DVD to someone else's house for a movie viewing experience.

Solid State might get there, when 50 gb solid state cards get below 2 dollars to manufacture.

I agree with SPZ. People prefer to spend money on tangible products. And studios prefer to sell tangible products so 'theft' can be clearly established. So Blu Ray will shine for a long time.

The reason solid state works so well for music: small file sizes, short playtimes. You can listen to several songs one after the other, but you're not likely to watch several movies one after the other, so the ability to fit several random movies into the same flash drive or portable hard disk is not a big advantage as it is with music. Solid state media is even less likely to work for HD content since it requires so much more bandwidth and storage.

Music videos. Video Podcasts. Funny Commercials. 'Viral' Videos. These are the only "movies" we'll be copying on flash drives for a long time. And probably not in HD.
