HD to DVD

I filmed a 2 hour musical with hd 720-30, then the following night I filmed the same musical with all the same setting but in SD. I made dvds out of both of them using canopus 4.5 and was amazed at how much better the final dvd quality was from the one I filmed in SD to begin with. In their original footage the hd was obviously better but when you convert it (at least with the dvd creater in canopus) I wound up with lower quality than original SD. Should I be surprised at this or did I do something wrong?
JUst thought I'd share.

I concur.

On P2 based 720/25pn the downconversion edius performs is better than the in-camera.

DVDs look better. Was suprised when I did some hi-def stuff like this for SD out.

I suppose it's entirely logical that a non-realtime downconversion/compression process is likely to be better than the effective DSP in-camera conversion.

Also when monitoring a firewire out from the Edius timeline (cross converting HD to SD) - also looks better.

To me this opens up the debate again about not bothering shooting HD for SD out, especially with the camera deriving SD from the HD.

Glad you bought it up.

FWIW, you are NOT agreeing, you are taking different positions.

In my experience the downconversion from HD yields great results, but I also haven't used the new DVD Creator, so I can't comment on whether this program has any issues.

I use Procoder 3 to create DVD-compliant MPEG2 files that are authored using Ulead DVD Movie Factory, or if they don't need any menus etc. I let Procoder output a VIDEO_TS structure.

Hmm yeah, I think I was a little quick off the mark and misunderstood scrappy. Doh!

But for the sake of clarity - HD in Edius through procoder express yields better results than starting with SD.

Can't comment on the DVD creator.

If it is supposed to yield better results starting with hd, where did I go wrong? These were my steps....
1. Filmed with 720-30,
2. loaded the files onto edius 4.5 with p2 select,
3. changed the project settings to sd so I can use dvd creater.
4. I then split the two hour dvd to two halves so I would get about an hour on each dvd.

I had all the project settings the same when I used the sd footage. I also had about an hour on each CD. The dvd with the original SD in noticably sharper.

by the way I also have ulead movie factory 2 and originally tried to put the whole thing on a double sided DVD but movie factory wouldn't write it.

I would leave the project in HD instead of temporarily changing to SD, output an MPEG2 file using Procoder Express for Edius (or Procoder 3 if you have it), and load the resulting file into DVD Creator outside of Edius -- DVD Creator can be run standalone.

Thanks

Thanks

Thanks guys. I'll give your suggestions a try Thof.
btw. I was filming some migrating birds (I know what you're thinking, Migrating birds? This guy needs a life) anyway while I was filming them I caught a glimpse of a UFO.

Yeah. What Thoff said. There is no need to change your project settings. Just use procoder express. Stay in the original project setting and render your final output.

Yeah... let's see that UFO :)

Could be the first time someone managed to get some non-ShakeyCam(tm) video of a UFO. Woohoo!
