HD to Dvd help URGENT

so i've been searching for an answer to this question on this forum and had no luck. Now i am desperate with only a few hours to my deadline. with final cut studio 2, i have to convert hd 1080i/24f shot by canon xh-a1 so a suitable file size to be entered into a festival.

I need to know what to convert it to so when i burn to dvd it isn't choppy.

Also separately how to make it 4:3 with the letterbox. I've tried using H.264 then keep aspect ratio with letter box, but it still comes out stretched. I've tried changing the actual sequence but still no results. Please help me bah.

Converting to DVD - wouldn't that just be mpeg 2 ?

If you want 4:3 with a letter box ( for a 4:3 tv) just make a 16:9 file/DVD and it should play on a 4:3 TV with a letter box. You may have to change something on the DVD player, but thats the best way

thanks eric, for some reason mpg2 wasn't working in studio pro. but i didnt realize i had a couple settings mixed up. Thanks for your help, got it done, and everything went well.
