HD Telecine vs Digital Intermediate

I am sitting in with my DP on the transfer of my film at Technicolor tomorrow and wondering something.

What is the difference between an HD Telecine and a Digital Intermediate?

For what I've been told we're going to HDCAM-SR tape then to a drive. I am getting it dumped as 10Bit 4:2:2 Un Compressed HD files to my FW800 drive.

Is there a noticeable drop in quality going to tape then back to a drive? It is my understanding that a digital intermediate is directly scanned in via a film scanner? I actually have no idea how an HD Telecine works.. or what is the norm..

anyone have insights on this?

I am spending a lot of money to do this and like to make sure I am getting a very high quality digital copy of my film. (Though I'm sure the technicolor guys know there ****..)

A DI is the process of digitally scanning film. (Super16,35) So a post place would scan the film to some type of imaging file and probably has their own proprietary method for color correction. A DI is done to take advantage of the color correction and digital imaging tools before a film is bumped back to 35.

An HD telecine will give you at least some form of archive medium more robust than just having an uncompressed file on a harddrive. But the color correction process of a DI/HD telecine is probably similar.
