HD tapes playback

I have a tape shot on HD that when I try to play back on my MiniDV cam it says:

"Incorrect tape specifications, playback is restricted" How can this be? Does it not use the same encoding as any other miniDV cam? Need I use my DVX or will that not work either?

Thanks

if it is shot on HDV (probably since it is on a miniDV tape) then you must have the proper HDV camera or deck to capture it.

Each company makes a slightly different version of HDV that is only compatable with their own cameras.

It's a different format. You can format a drive for the Mac, or you can format that same drive for the PC, right? Same disk drive, but totally incompatible formats.

Well, you can record Sony HDV or you can record Canon HDV or you can record JVC HDV or you can record regular DV all on the same miniDV tape. But they're all different formats. No DV deck is going to read any HDV tape.

This is an oversimplification. JVC HDV cameras are strictly 720p recordings on DV tapes that only work with their cameras/decks. Currently they are the only HDV manufacturer that produces 720p cameras.

Canon and Sony record HDV 1080i video that is compatible with eachother. Where they differ is Canon's "F" modes, which are progressive recordings within the 1080i wrapper/spec. Sony's decks don't recognize how they are encoded to tape and won't play them back properly. (current Sony HDV decks, that is)

If the video looks like HD, but not with a lower "film look" frame rate (24 or 30p) than it's normal HDV 1080i, which both Sony and Canon can record to tape and are mutually compatible as far as formats on tape go.

Understand that HDV and DV are two completely different recording formats, even though they both record to common miniDV tapes.

Interesting tidbit of information: An insider has told me that when you open up the Sony and Canon HD cams you will find that they are in fact the same camera with different bodies. That's why they are compatible with each other.
