HD Source to DVD conversion problems

Hi,

I have shot some HD content with my panasonic DVCPRO HD camera and brought it into Premiere 3 in the P2 format. The video looks great in premiere however when I try to export it to MPEG2 for my SD DVD, the encoding looks horrible. I get color banding, distortion, funny lines with movement. I think I must have some bad settings. I'm using Adobe Media Encoder to encode it to MPEG2. Any help on the best settings/resolving my problem???

Thanks,

Ben

Sorry for the unquick response, I was out of the office... I have just been using the presets in the encoder. I've tried NTSC DVD Progressive widescreen HQ, NTSC Widescreen MQ, NTSC Medium Quality, NTSC HQ. The color banding I think might just be an issue with my WM player, but I still have some fuzzy action and other artifacts in the picture.

Thanks,

Ben

I have gotten mediocre results using Premiere to encode to a SD dvd from an HD source when I try to use it to directly go to a dvd. The best results I've gotten have been from first encoding a SD mpeg2 from the HD footage out of Premiere or Vegas or any NLE and then using a dedicated dvd authoring program like DVD Architect or Adobe Encore. The thing you don't want to happen though when you are putting it to dvd is to have the mpeg2 recompressed. That usually seems to be where it loses quality because the SD mpeg2 usually looks very good on the computer.

Best,
Andy

I don't think the mpeg looks very good coming out of premiere. I was using encore to author the dvd. I get real bad color banding when playing it in windows media player but when I play it in VLC that goes away, but I still have some shakiness and flickering. It's not horrible, but would expect it to be much better. Esp with a 60,000 dollar camera.

I've tried most of the presets for DVD. I've tried NTSC DVD Progressive widescreen HQ, NTSC Widescreen MQ, NTSC Medium Quality, NTSC HQ. What are your settings?

Sorry, I've been working with Sony Vegas lately so I'm trying to remember what I used to use on Premiere.

Is there a way to just export mpeg2 and not use one of their presets for DVDs in Pemiere?

Have you tried custom settings and doing 2-pass and turn up the bitrate?
