HD-SDI <> HDMI converter?

I was wondering if anyone knows if a converter exists that that can not only convert an HD-SDI to an HDMI signal, but also can be reversed (HDMI to HDSDI)? It would also be nice if the audio continued both directions thru the conversion as well. I could definitly benefit from such a device, and I would pay nicely for it.

AJA has them too. I do not believe any of them will allow audio to follow video as SDI does not carry an audio signal. I have never seen one that does a push pull either. I am not sure of it is not available or possible or if just allows the manufacturer to sell two boxes :-)).

Blackmagic has a series of converters, probably have at least one that does what you want.

Thanks Barry, I'll check them out.

SDI can carry an audio signal a long side the video. I do it all the time while recording to a Nanoflash.

SDI does carry audio, it can carry up to 8 channels.

The only thing that would likely be lost in a conversion is timecode, because HDMI doesn't carry timecode.

I really find it funny sometimes on these forums where people state things as fact, such as sdi not being able to carry audio. Anyone with any small degree of experience knows this is not true, but the guy who wrote that said it so matter of factly it sounds true. Why do people post answers they are not 1000 percent sure about? Just a peeve, sorry....

Sorry.

For the HDSDI to HDMI conversion, go with a Decimator 2, by Decimator Designs. Abel Cine, amongst other places, have them. Relatively cheap at $500, small, light, takes 5v to 24v, and does the job beautifully. Also gives you SD Composite out, and audio over L and R RCA jacks.

Here's a pamphlet: http://decimator.com/brochures/DECIMATOR2_brochure.pdf

Beautiful little box. Keep it on my Steadicam monitor 24/7.

In case anyone is interested I don't think any such device exists in a mini converter form, that is other than the Nanoflash which happens to do the conversion both directions.

you'll pay nicely for this one, but it ought to do the trick;

let us know if you end up getting it, and how it works out for you. seems a little pricey, but i guess it's cheaper than getting a field monitor with hdmi input. and i'm impressed with the fact that it converts both ways.
