For the Canon it would be of limited use; for $4900 you get 20gb, which at HD-SDI rates that would fly by in about two minutes.

For the HVX, I don't see the point at all -- the HVX doesn't have HD-SDI output, so you'd have to use an additional $1500 component->HDSDI converter and then you'd get two minutes of storage for $6400 ($4,900 + $1,500).

I guess it depends on how much the bigger versions cost, but even the 160gb version is only going to give you 16 minutes of HD-SDI recording. Which is plenty, but what would that cost? $50,000?

I dunno -- for some uses it may make some sense, but I doubt that very many XLH1 or HVX users would find it cost-effective. Maybe for a special-effects house who needs to be able to get uncompressed footage for a certain shot?

Thank you very much for your answer that I was waiting meanwhile I and many others we are playing with your material. Very cool. As you can see in the sub-forum that Jarred created to us as playground  .

I have the same doubts: price?...but my guess is that it's impossible to be so different than the 20Gb...or not?

Even because to my work the artifacts can be deadly.

All my projects/work is for big screen. Fortunately but also unfortunately, as well, with the cost that we have in that arena. Indie...european...arthouse but all the financing possibilities have the same request: final master@35mm for big screen.

Even digitally: @my native country, we have now until the beggining of 2006, a chain of 20 digital screens only to native indies. So...

Any thoughts?

Are you suggesting that there is a way to get uncompressed HD (not DVC PRO HD)
out from this camera?

Today, it's Sunday, 5ive!...but thanks anyway for your attention to this thread that I open with an interesting tip - if that device works @affordable price (maybe not...that's the problem!...so, we must wait a few years  ) - for all with the intention to go to the big screen. We don't care about wedding(s), events or something like that stuff but, of course, with the due respect concerning all the pro working in those fields. But when I heard this or that, I must say sometimes I feel myself forgotten between so much media convergence...

...do not confuse hollywood big screen with indie big screen, OK?

And the same comparatively US vs. ARTHOUSE filmmaking @europe...

...digitally or not - one day all the european arthouse will be produced in HD - the question is:

When?

Now with the progressive HVX?

Or with the interlaced CCD of the Canon XL-H1 (less noisier - the cam! - I don't care if it's because an interlaced better CCD or not! ) ?

Or even only with the uncompressed HD and, as I above-mentioned, we must wait!

Or is it possible to shoot @HVX in order to go to a better intermediate as Elton said in another thread and «then master to whatever format is needed»? Well said! The doubt is: will it be HVX200 enough? I'd like to know why Panasonic don't show HVX footage @big screen. Even digitally projected? When 4/5 years ago, I did an workshop @CineAlta, Sony Broadcast made screen tests @35mm film-out included! And it will be absurd do it @small monitors. What is this, Pana? Maybe uncompressed might be a solution? Even to HVX?

[Of course, don't forget ONLY for who needs to go to big screen and don't want to shoot in film. Whatever the size: 35mm or Super16. It's not the same than video. The aesthetics results are completely different. I speak with experience 'cause all my basis is in film and I hate the production constraints. Even about Hollywood that all the people would like work in. IMHO, their movies SUCKS! Why? For reasons of market!...I prefer a REAL independent way, not so DIY (however I like the concept) because we need people to work but not as hollywood way. I don't want for my art stuff the same opinion that I have about the hollywood product!]

Ah yes,
just found you mentioning this in another post...

So in this case I have a special analogue capture card on a computer with a large Raid storage...costly & limited to studio.
But just the same as the Canon H1's SDI output
?

-----EDIT: Uh-oh...I just made Silver

Well, no, analog won't be exactly the same as HD-SDI of course. HD-SDI can take the direct digital stream right off the DSP, whereas with analog you have to convert that to analog, then capture and digitize that back to digital. HD-SDI will of course be cleaner.

However, the two signals won't be the same no matter what you do anyway. The Canon looks to have a couple of stops less latitude, the HVX has CineGamma, etc. I think the actual form of uncompressed will have less final impact on your image than the chips and DSP will have. HD-SDI is superior to analog output, but whether it's superior enough to make much of a difference is a question for side-by-side testing to determine. One thing we know is that the Canon outputs its HD-SDI as 8-bit quantizing carried within a 10-bit stream, so it's not like you're getting full 10-bit quality from it.

So it seems possible,
but the drive speed & space mean either studio setttings
(or if Emmanual's Russian HDrive works ...a lot of Money for a little Space)

Still Props to Emmanual for pushing this topic...
If Someone makes a portable Raid Array of 7200 drives we
have ourselves a travelling Circus of Cinema (uncompressed)

then we have to update all systems to be able to edit it.

BTW: Is it true the P2 only records good takes?
I have heard it will automatically detect superflous information, or bad acting and delete it on the spot, clearing up more space in the card

Going to be a lot of empty P2 cards out there.
