HD Projector for Screening Room

It would have to scale every single format that the HVX records in (both SD and HD). There would seem to be better choices than this unit.

Besides the Lumens, the fact that it can display a 1280 x 768 image should mean that it can display 720p footage coming from the HVX. Am I correct? If not can anyone recommend a HD projector within that price range?

If it letterboxes / centers the 1280x720 content, then you're good. If the projector scales, then it's a question of how good a job it does.

Hey, try checking out AVSforum.com it's a great site for a/v information. Id say go to display devices and then projectors $3500 MSRP and below. You can find an incredible amount of information about each projector and people are very open to helping you understand.

Hey Ernest, I've hated optima ever since I bought my first projector (which was an optima) nothing but problems. Then I got a Sanyo Z2 - great little box and the 3 year warranty was sweet - had a problem 2 years into it and $800 worth of work was done. Between the Sanyo Z4 and the Panasonic 900U, those are the best under $2K. My next projector will probably be the 900U or it's sequel.

Filmstox, I did the DIY a year ago for fun - not worth the money or time - just buy a cheepo off of woot.com when it comes up on sale. ANY purchased projector will be much better than the home brew LCD DIY.

I've run the sanyo series for a few years now. Currently sanyo Z4 1280x720, native.

I do warn you, the component stage hook up between the z4+HVX is very poor and doesn't show it in the best light.

The best I have seen it is to convert the HVX files to WMV-HD and then play from a decent HTPC via HDMI. Then it looks damn good.

Other thing, get your room dark - no amount of lumens makes up for a dark room.

It really depends on your budget, but DLP is going to give the best picture, albeit at a higher price.

Optoma has some stellar performers video wise and I have seen the best LCD units, while bright and well saturated, they just don't compare to the quality of a DLP.

First off, choosing a projector is a little more in-depth than just looking at a few things. Really, you want to look at the room, determine seating locations, then determine screen size and aspect ratio, then determine projector and screen material at the same time.

I may not be a master with the HVX-200, but I do know my stuff in home theater design. Ernest, if you want some FREE advice that is worth its weight in gold, shoot me a message detailing your room dimensions (L,W,H) as well as descriptions of entry door locations. Photos would be even better.

As with anything, quality and budget go hand in hand so let me know where your ceiling is and I will cut out the stuff that isn't going to fit in there.

Here is one of the theaters we are just finishing up:

And yes, that is a true acoustically transparent 2.35:1 CinemaScope screen. :)

Filmstox that is crazy cool! Mike I can shoot you the dimensions later this week. That screening room looks good and looking at it, I may have the same dimensions; eventhough I probably won't have the leather seats (not in the budget), but the room will be totally dark. Thanks for all the advice guys. Also Mike I'm not trying to spend over $2K on the projector. May main goal is that the projector can display a 720P HD image. Throughout my studio I do have flat panels that can display both 720p and a 1080i image but just wanted a large screen to get a good idea how my projects will look on the big screen. Also want to incorporate Dolby 5.1 and pro logic into the surround design. Any suggestions on a surround unit? Budget is under $800. Thanks again.
