Hello, I'm a new member(less than a month on here) I don't have an HD camera or an HD TV yet(it might be my age, i'm 23!) and I was wondering how many moviemakers out there do have HD products. I always hear people talking about buying HD cameras or don't waste the money, but then it occurs to me that most of my friends/family haven't stepped up to bat yet. Also has anyone heard of the DVD-HD? I think I heard something about DVD's about to be replaced with them soon.

I don't personally own it, but the house I'm living in right now is equipped with a Samsung 24" Flatscreen HDTV... problem is, when there's lots of movement or complex stuff going on (fog, smoke etc) there are lots of ghosting problems, and I think cus it's older, that it has to use some wierd pixel shift nonsense or something, it's kinda bizzarre, like - lots of stuff looks like when you play 24p in a 60i timeline. If you know what I mean...

I don't understand why there is all this fuss to go "HD" honestly, I think instead of shelling out 10k for a HVX or whatnot, why not continue to do what I always do? Rent...

Rent the DVX, shoot a video

Rent SDX, shoot a video

Rent Varicam, shoot a video

Honestly, do you really "need" your camera to be around constantly? Unless you use it every other day for something... that's the only way I can justify owning a canon zr60 but then, that's just me.

I did read a report by the EBU or someone similar that found HD resolutions weren't visible on TVs under 27" at normal viewing distances.

If you are buying BIG, then it certainly makes a difference though.

that is the forum building post. :)

well about HD, I think you should never buy the 1st generation, because it is just wasting money. you should buy after fixing these problems.
in EU it is another question... new techniques spread not so fast. so when in the US everybody uses HD it will just start to spread in EU

In the US, approximately 10% of households have some form of HDTV set. But the # of people who actually subscribe to an HDTV service is around half that, so maybe 5% of the households are watching HDTV broadcasts. Many of the people who bought an HDTV didn't buy it necessarily because it was HDTV, but rather that the type of television they wanted (bigscreen projection, or thin wall-hanging plasma, etc) are only offered in HD versions.

In Europe, the numbers are more around zero percent.

DVDs will be "replaced" when people quit buying them. It is true that HD-DVD and/or Blu-Ray Disc products are about to be introduced. Whether they meet with widespread market acceptance remains to be seen, of course; DVD-Audio and SACD sure didn't "replace" regular audio CDs...
