HD on YouTube

I have a gorgeious HD short that I need to put on youtube. Despite many efforts, youtube makes the image look blotchy. Does anyone know the proper export settings in FCP 6 to retain image quality?

one odd thing that occurred was this...

I exported a version of the 30 second short with a short clip 2 minutes into the timeline by accident, so the clip ended up being 2:10 instead of 30 seconds, when I loaded this onto youtube, however, the quality looked beautiful. I cant enter this into the contest that it is for at 2:10. here is where it gets wierd: with teh same export settings as the 2 minute quality sequence i still get splotchy video on youtube, and even wierder: when i trim the 2:10 clip to 30 seconds with quicktime pro, save, and then load onto youtube it still becomes splotchy. How is this possible? I am desperately in need of assistance. How to get my HD picture at least some quality on youtube?

Thanks,

SB

you tube has a 100 meg source file limit
so if you have a longer run time then youtube will have to compress the resolution way lower to keep it under 100 megs.
if you have short clips like 20 seconds then its no where near the 100meg limit and won't further compress.
If you pre-compress the file to under 100megs and convert it to an .flv (youtube is going to do that to it anyways) then youtube won't alter the file at all and youll get the same quality uploaded as you had on your machine.

Never trust youtube to compress your stuff

Yep- on Youtube content trumps quality bigtime. I do hear they want to start some HD content at some point.

Thanks to Apple and the iPhone youtube is converting all it's database to H264, which should mean a far better quality. I don't know if they will downsize HD footage to SD, and i don't know what compression ratio will the H264 footage have, but it will for sure look a lot better.
I suggest you to put your film there then post a link to a high quality 720p movie somewhere else.
