HD in Vegas

Maybe Smithy's right...

I'll probably get ConnectHD eventually, because I don't have a project coming up soon.

Hey if we rendered hd material from vegas into wmv9 hd @ hd resolution (say 720p) then when we play it on a laptop or thru a hd projector will we get true hd video results ?

Yes. HD is resolution. If you render a 1280x720 file and can project it at that resolution, then you have "true HD."

I think laptops with a decent processor can run these files right ? So if a laptop can run this file will a HD WMV give a better result than a normal resolution video or will the WMV codec hit the quality even though the wrapper is HD Video ? Because ive noticed wmv always softens the video a bit.

Also then whats the difference between HDV and pure HD ?? Ive heard HDV is even more sluggish to edit on a pc...can you please explain ?

Yes it does. The best quality is make a Raylight AVI and author a P2 card with P2 Maker (included with Raylight). Then play it back from the camera through an HD monitor. Except for effects and transitions (which are recompressed), it will be the exact same quality as what you shot.

Hmmm....so ill have buy raylight just for this ?
No you would buy it for everything else it does as well, including native MXF support for Vegas (now) and Premiere (soon), and the ability with DVFilm Maker (included) to convert other HD formats like 60i HDV to 24P, Apple DVCPROHD Quicktime and others!

I use cineform with Vegas and it plays back in windows media player fine as a Cineform encoded AVI.

David - you said:

Maybe I'm wrong but that doesn't seem high enough resolution to me. My camera records 1440x1080 anamorphic (i.e. which unsqueezes to 1920) as HD and that's what I process it at, progressive. Have I missed something?

1280x720 is the resolution of 720p. Which is why it's called "720p."

But it's not the only HD format. There's also 1080i and 1080p.

Yes, And also secondly because my project would have to be projected from a hd video projector which has native resolution at 1280x720. Its labeled a HD projector. So i figured if i render at this resolution then id have actual HD. But my problem is my shots were planned for SD. Because im unsure if i can edit native HDV on vegas 7 here. It might slow the machine down. This is going to be a 45 min final product. So i might need to load about 2hrs of footage on the timeline.
