HD footage to SD DVD workflow in various formats

Hey everyone,

I wanted to get your input / experience on your workflow for working with 720P 24pN/30pN or 24p/30p footage going out to SD DVD.

I've read the white paper on sequence settings but my question is: what settings do you use for media encoder? Do you use custom settings to get better quality out of your encoding process?

For example:

What settings would you use for a 720p 24pN timeline going to a DVD?

I appreciate your input.

That is the question-how to take 10 lbs. and stuff it into a five pound bag.

Everybody wants to know the formula.

Take a walk through "output and compression" in the post production area

and don't forget a rewritable dvd or two.

And perhaps some aspirin.

Perhaps I didn't state the question properly. I'm not sending the raw footage to a dvd, I'm creating a Mpeg2 DVD for playback.

The question is fine...it's the answer that's complicated.

There are several routes you can take, none seem to really give you what

you want.

The end understanding you might come up with is that the big production

companies have the resources (software and hardware) that make commercial

DVDS look much better than the lone individual can.

I understand that. My question has to do with the progressive / interlacing / frame rate / bit rate questions. Does a 24pn timeline go to a 29.97 lower field setting? What about 30pn, etc?

24pn is progressive...no fields. I use PPCS3 and it has a preset for 24p material.

Each editor pkg has it's own parameters. Check to help section in whatever pkg you have.

7000 bit rate is the usual high end for compatibility.

I've checked the help file and other forums. I'm posting here because I was looking for some other people who may have experience with custom settings (as I said in my post) or other examples of how they dealt with the footage.

That's helpful, thanks.

If anyone has specific information regarding 720p 24pN to Mpeg 2 DVD in Premire Cs4 I would appreciate it.

Have you tried burning it with encore, letting that do all the encoding and seeing how it comes out?

It's worth a shot

I could try that, but I want to know exactly what is going on rather than just let Encore deal with it.
