HD footage on a MacBook Pro?

Is it possible to edit and render HD footage on a macbook pro? I assume it is - but I was in the apple store today, and I opened up final cut to play around with the test footage they had setup... and it would not render any of the changes I made to it.

After I changed the sequence settings (from HD to a standard 720x480 with a regular codec) it worked fine...

What type of HD where you doing (i.e. HDV, DVCPRO, XDCAM, 720p 1080i, 1080P), and what effects were you trying to do?

And did the specs meet that of HD requirements?

As far as I know it should work fine,.. but you got me wondering what you did.

Yeah I use FCP on my girlfriend's MacBook Pro all the time. We edited a project traveling internationally with 720p footage from a firestore, so not only does it edit HD here in the US but all over the world, too

I'm editing a doc shot DVCPRO HD 720 60p no problems. I've even done some tests using PRO-RES 1920x1080 and it works just fine. The graphics card and processor can handle just about anything. Hard drive speed is really the issue. FW 800 works fine for the above codecs. For uncompressed HD you could get a raid and an expresscard/34 Esata adapter for 60 bucks and be rockin'.

No problem here on the MacBook Pro. I just set up Qmaster to distribute processing with my desktop iMac which doubled the speed!! (Qmaster is included with Compressor.)
