HD footage is choppy

I am a newbie. Just captured HDV from my Canon XHA1 into Premiere Pro CS4.

It captured it in mpeg format with no frame drops on to an external G-Raid3 drive.

When I try to play it back in source monitor, or program monitor, the video is choppy.

I am reading about rendering it in the work space.

What does rendering do? Does it convert it to an uncompressed format so it plays back smoother?

Is there any way to control which format it renders to?

I have a dual core 2.4Ghz processor with 4GB ram and external 3TB Graid-3 drive.

Any theories on why I am getting choppy playback?

The original footage is 23.976 frame rate, 1440x1080 mpeg

Sequence settings

Editing mode hdv 1080p
Timebase 23.976 fps
video preview format I-Fram Only MPEG (and I cannot change it)

In the Project window, what frame rate does the footage read as?

If 29.97, you need to right-click on the footage in the Project window, choose Interpret Footage, and then conform it to 23.976. Hopefully, you can just check the "remove 24p DV pulldown" box, but it might not be available.

First of the original footage I captured is converted from my HDV tape to mpeg into Premiere Pro so directly I cannot right click to see its frame rate.

But my recording mode on Cannon XHA1 was HDV 24p so I am presuming the source is 23.97fps.

The sequence I defined is 23.97fps

I also tried different sequence settings. The setting using Desktop instead of 1080p and a DV 24pA codec gives me best results without jerks.

I think this may be an artifact of mpeg2 files showing judder which is pronounced when the camera pans.

If the camera is not panning, I dont see jerks.

Would it help to convert the mpeg to another lighter codec? Any suggestions which codec to use?
