HD-DVD or BluRay? Which will win?

Does anyone have a gut feeling as to the outcome of this format war? Will we be seeing multi-format DVD players and burners, or will we have to be prepared to deliver in multiple formats?

Is one format going to die a slow death, leaving behind all kinds of obsolete media? I don't know how to feel about the whole situation. Hopefully the consumer will be the winner in the end.

The consumer is frequently the loser when companies can't agree on standards. Blu-Ray is the technically superior format, but why do I see Sony raping consumers if Blu-ray gets the upper hand? HD DVD (currently) has less storage capacity, but manufacturing costs are likely to be less (at least initially). My own preference is a workable solution at a non-premium price. A format war will further delay HD penetration since Hi-Def DVDs will end up driving the whole market.

What happened to Zip 100mb? Please tell me that wasn't a fad? I just saved my last project on 410 zip discs.

I think HD-DVD will win out, largely because manufacturers will not have to significantly change their equipment to convert to it. Blu-Ray is a whole new ball game . . . and yes, Sony holds the cards.

Haha. I still have boxes of zip disks. Iomega is a great example of a company that got greedy and took a dive. Even though they licensed out manufacturing for zip disks--the licensing fees were too high (Panasonic take note for P2) and other technologies passed them by.

PK, you're a hoot. :)

I know it's a little vindictive, but I'd love to see Sony's baby die. again. especially since it seems like they want to own us, and make us replace all our equipment to support their fancy.

At the same time, panasonic supports BluRay, so...

I don’t care if Panasonic supports Blu-Ray. I’m no Panatic. It’s the DVX which has my loyalty, and it looks like the HVX will rule as well. But that doesn’t mean Panasonic does.

David, right on about panny--i'm just thinking that they've been pretty spot-on about technology lately, and perhaps we should trust their judgment. (?)

Errp. I also didn’t mean to give the impression that I’m for HD-DVD, either. I’m actually pretty agnostic on the point right now. I just think HD-DVD will win out, without regard to which one I might personally prefer.

I'll just sit back and wait for the verdict, then I'll consider buying into the winner (if I ever feel the need to go HD).

Agreed. I guess I prefer the less expensive format, but if there's only going to be one winner, I hope that it's decided sooner than later. So to modify my question, "How long before we know for sure?"

The consumers will vote with their wallets. Frankly, they probably wouldn't care about the capacity of the disk as long as it can hold a full length HD movie. Then it's just a matter of which disk is cheaper.

I think nomatter which format spec wins, it will still have to be branded as "HD-DVD" to the consumer base, or they're likely to just not "get it".

I think HD-DVD will win out. I like Blue-Ray for the space but if I'm a big motion picture co. like Paramount,Disney,WB ect. I like HD-DVD because it tells you what it is. We all know what DVD's are so what are we buying. It is an HD, DVD. And I as the customer know that I need everything HD (even windows from Windex are HD now. just check out their new ad) Any way it is another VHS vs Bata-MAX and I think that blue ray is Bata Max

Damn, I hope you're wrong because bluray rules! Anything less is a major step backwards.

I'm partial to BluRay myself. Although I'm not a Sony Fanboy in any way. I just wish they'd unify already....but Sony is NOT budging on giving up their specs. They want Toshiba to merge their stuff. It's likely to be a stalemate.....then we'll have the *joy* of making the decision for them with our hard earned money. Can't wait :(

"Not sure if this is the end of the line or just more posturing, but now Sony Computer Entertainment prez Ken Kutaragi says that the chances of a single unified next-gen DVD standard emerging are “almost none” and that they’re moving forward with plans to put a Blu-ray drive in the PlayStation 3. And given that the PS3 is less than a year away (at least officially), they’re probably getting close to the point (if they haven’t passed it already) where they have to start finalizing the console’s specs."
