HD DVD or Blu Ray

I finally sold my entire collection of DVD's so that I could begin a collection in HD. So far I noticed that HD DVD has more DVD's. A movie is much better in high resolution. But who will win the battle and which format is better?

I thought I heard about a cross-platform player being developed/released sooner-than-later.

Anyone want to clarify?? I'd wait for that. Forget this stupid format war.

There's no real format war here. It will cost the manufacturers about $1 to make their respective devices at least play their competitors DVD. If they don't do it I'm sure someone in China will.

As far as which format to purchase, niether, use Netflix.

HDDVD is at the end of its development while Blu-Rey is at the beginning and has much greater capacity.

The reason there are more HD-DVD's currently available is becuase they have fewer studios committed to the format and therefore they need to have as many HD-DVD titles in the revenue stream as possible before Blu-Rey becomes cost competitive. Blu-Rey should eventually win out.

Okay, there is a lot of misinformation here. First, HD-DVD and Blu-Ray use completely different lasers to read the discs, and the blue laser diode (used in the Blu-Ray drive) is said to cost about $125-150 alone. A dual-format player is definitely something you'll see soon (probably '07), but it won't be a simple $1 addition.

Second, HD-DVD is nowhere near the end of its development cycle. The Xbox-360 drive was released just last week (to overwhelmingly positive success), and Toshiba will be releasing their second generation stand-alone players in the next few weeks.

Third, HD-DVD is outselling all other high-definition media by a rate of at least 3-1, and the Amazon.com sales rankings show HD-DVD blowing away Blu-Ray. Blu-Ray has a lot of catching up to do, bit it certainly has the backing of most of the major studios. With HD-DVD, you're missing Fox titles, Disney titles, Sony, and many more studios. If you want it all, you'll have to pick up a Blu-Ray, and an HD-DVD player. Eventually one format will probably win out, but I have a feeling neither will enjoy the success of SD-DVD anytime soon.

For those who say it isn't worth starting a collection of high-def movies, well you must not enjoy watching movies in the best quality possible. When a HD-DVD or Blu-Ray disc is properly mastered, it completely blows away any over-the-air high-def broadcast, satellite, or cable out there. Watching Batman Begins, King Kong, Casablanca, Unforgiven, The Corpse Bride, The Searchers, Mission Impossible trilogy, Kingdom of Heavem Extended, etc. mastered in pristine pure 1080p, many of which contain Dolby True HD and DTS Master lossless audio...well it is what home theater has been lacking. I haven't been this excited in home theater since I began collecting DVDs in 1997. Both formats are true cutting-edge technologies, and worth every penny of the investment, if you have the proper display to view them. The cheapest way to get your feet wet is to grab a great deal on an HD-DVD player and pick up a couple of titles, and see for yourself. There's no guarantee of its survival, but it'll offer you the best high-def content available right now, and could cost you as little as $200+ the cost of a movie.

yes, several companies (amongst others Toshiba and LG) have announced dual-format players that will arrive shortly (I'm guessing Februaryish).

I'd wait this one out
