HD blowup to film...

How well will something shot on say..HVX-200 (or similar since it's not out yet) blow up to film? What would it look like? Still alot of artifacts? Has anyone seen something shot on HD blown up to film? details please. Thanks in advance.

There's not really anything comparable. The only 1080/24p camera out there is the CineAlta, and many films have been shot on it and blown up to film. But that's about $160,000 worth of camera and lens; the HVX won't be directly comparable to that.

I've seen DVX and XL1 footage blown up -- the DVX was far superior, but still not able to hold a candle to real film. At its absolute best, it could maybe pass for 16mm.

Marcus at DVFilm has blown up Sony Z1 HDV footage and says it's way sharper than anything coming from any DV camera. That's about the most likely thing you're going to find to compare as to how the HVX will look. But when you factor in that the HVX is shooting actual 24p, and has twice the color sampling, and no MPEG-2 motion artifacts, it should be a reasonably safe bet to say that the HVX *should* look even better. But really, that's just wild speculation based on paper specs; we haven't seen any actual footage from the camera, nor will we for several months.

I would think the HVX will look really good blown up to 35mm,... if it's shot well. I've seen plenty of SD & HD clips transfered to 35mm and they all look really good. The Film itself really helps it achieve that Film look, duh! Actually it's amazing how much film brings out that unique film look in video. It's really fun to see. To answer your question, HD transfers look great!

I think most of our future challenges using the HVX will be around shallow DOF & needing more stops. I can live with those restrictions for the next few years while the next HVX?... is being built.

Oh, your audience, they won't notice anything if you shoot it well, that means keeping faithful to 100% std. cinematic production values & processes. So getting good exposure will still be a challenge.

Thanks guys!
I just was considering when I saw "Party Monster" 1st on the big screen, and thought it was amusing, but looked horrible. Then I recently caught it on HBO and it looked good - kind of film documentary like, instead of video-ey as was onscreen. But I swear I've seen other films blown up from DVX-ish cameras that looked great! (could be wrong)
I'm positive HVX will definitely look better. Thanks for your replies again.

Yeah, we'll have to wait and see what the footage looks like, but I am betting (hopeing, praying) that it will be comparable to standard (1.33:1) 16mm blown-up to 1.85:1 35mm. Anyway has got to look better than DV to 35mm, which I think has been a disappointment so far. The best DV blow-up I've personally saw was "Open Water" which was still kind of a disappointment.
I am also hopeing that the qualty jump of the HVX will lead to an increase in demand for blow-ups which will bring down the price.
