Hawaii

You haven't seen anything yet. :)

Tino and I went out shooting almost every day. We covered allot of ground and got some fantastic footage.
I loaned him a few of my P2 cards to shoot with and then burned the data to DVD's so he can play around with the HD footage at home.

The Hawaii Int. Film Festival was top notch.

Here's a shot looking down Waikiki beach with the movie screen set up.

Then of course, scenes like this one are around every corner of the road.

Watching the sunset while waiting for the nights films to begin on Sunset on the Beach as part of the Hawaii International Film Festival.

What better setting than this for the mini bootcamp we had.

Wow! Kevin... is that first shot CC'd? That is gorgeous. And I love that palm in front of the setting sun!

Nice, nice, nice!!!

And oh! Just noticed... is that the outdoor cinema screen in the first grab?

Hey Ted,
Yep, that's the 30 foot screen they show the films on at the beach. Pretty sweet.

The city shot is just the 2fps hack with the white balance set at 32k. That's it.

I had the chroma set up a few to give me a little more saturation and the master ped at -8 to give me some nice blacks.

Very nice grab coming out of that thing!!!

So, with the movie screen... you could sit behind it and watch it backwards? Is that correct? Or do they have the back blacked out?

It looks like from your shot and the one on that link that the thing can be viewed from both sides. That would be wild.

It's a rear projection screen so yes, you could watch it backwards like I was. Made the subtitles a little hard to read on the foreign films though. :)

HAHA! I'll bet!

Well, I'm out for a while! Enjoy Hawaii... I've got to go crawl under someones house and do some plumbing! (YEA!)

What a great time in Hawaii!

What a great time in Hawaii!

Well, got back two days ago and I'm still recovering from jet-lag!... Kevin, I DON'T WANT TO HEAR ABOUT YOUR TWO EXTRA DAYS IN HI! LOL. What a wonderful time we had! A "Mini-Bootcamp" taught by our own Kevin Railsback. Great conversation, weather, food and views (nature and bikini-clad), awesome film festival... Ahhhh, can't wait to be back (bootcamp or not).

Guys, I just wanted to thank publicly Kevin (n8ture) Railsback for his enthusiasm, dedication and generosity during the "Honolulu reject's bootcamp" I learned a great deal and feel that he should be part of every bootcamp for now on!

E pili mau na pomaika `i ia `oe! (May blessings ever be with you!)

Me ka aloha pumehana! (With kindest regards; warm aloha)

Tino

PS: Dude, I'm obsessed with Hawaii... I'm learning Hawaiian. Thanks again for everything brother. When are we going back?

Mahalo nui loa Tino! :)

After watching the DVD, I'm sure you can understand why I wasn't to worried about going over all the camera controls. :)

I had a great time. I wish more people would have come over cause it was a great place to get some great footage and make some great friends. Did I say it was great? :)

Here's the big wave video from a still I posted earlier above.

I filmed this the afternoon before we went out to see if it would be a good place to capture the sunrise.
Turned out it was. :)
Using that software I showed you it was easy to see where the sun would rise at anytime of the day.

I'm glad you got something out of it. I did as well. I'll now shoot my sunrises and sunsets with the 2fps hack instead of the interval time option since we both feel it's so much better.

I'll also send you my scene settings so you can play around with what we used on the island to compare at home.

You guys missed out who didn't come over!!!

A hui hou,
--==Kevin==--

Oh, man... I wanted to go. But I don't have an HVX!!! I would loved to have had the time hanging out and shooting the breeze, the sunsets, the sunrises... All of it!!!

Hopefully another opportunity will present itself soon!

Ted

Hey Ted,
That's what Bootcamps are all about.
John didn't have an HVX but we went over the camera, answered all his questions and we went out and shot some footage.
I even turned it over to him to shoot some shots.
The thing was that he was able to "see" the answers to his questions. He'd ask about this and I'd say "Well, let me show you." and he could see it not just read about it. He'd have the advantage of being able to see what we shot and how the HVX did.

Tino has an HVX but didn't have any P2 cards. We'd go out in the mornings and afternoons and I'd loan him a few of my P2 cards.
We'd stop for breakfast and I'd dump the P2 cards onto my laptop while we were eating and talking about filmmaking and the HVX.
Then we'd go out later and do it all over again.

So, just because you don't have an HVX doesn't mean a HVX Bootcamp isn't right for you.

And beyond all that, you make some great new friends.

If they have another one in an exotic location see if you can go and tell Jarred, that you'd really like a day two where you can have hands on time and to bring me along. :)

Tino and I did an experiment one sunrise. He used the 2fps hack and I used the interval 1 frame every two seconds. We both agreed that we preferred his 2fps hack shot over the interval shot.

So, don't let not having an HVX stop you.

*drool*

My God. I'm going to Hawaii from December 19 - January 2, then April 21 - 26 ... I need to get my HVX by then.
