having problems rendering

I have a G5 2.3, with 4.5gb of ram. I am importing timelapses that i shot on a 10d digital still camera. Most of them are between 200 and 400 images. They are being imported as 1frame duration. I am using a dv50anamorphic timeline. When i bring the images onto the timeline, I nest them and then render. The rendering is taking about 4-8 minutes per timelapse. It seems a little slow. Is there anyway to import the images as dv50 or to speed up my rendering capabilities in fcp. Is there a better way to do timelapses with a still camera.

A few things to consider:
Importing as a sequence into QT Player (pro since you have FCP).
Export as a movie file and set size to be video size. Right now I'm assumign FCP has to import and resize each one.
Another option is to:
Use photoshop or Graphic Converter and set up actions to import/resize and resave the frames.

What is Qt player.
I am going to try the photoshop thing. the problem is that photoshop doesn't allow exporting as video formats such as Dvntsc/dv50, or any of the dvpro formats.
