having issues with vegas' DirectX Plugins

[NOTE: I'm going to paste this from the post I made on majorgeeks.com since I got directed here from them and it will be better for me to just do it that way. That and I'm just lazy. :engel017:]

This is happening with Vegas and Elements on my Vista machine. Movie Maker is, for some odd reason, unaffected. Not sure what's going on, and I've tried some information from the ONLY other board that had someone post with a similar problem, but nothing was solved (involved me having to take ownership of the System32 files, which was a chore on its own for the solution doing nothing to help it).

The issue is that it won't start up without crashing and giving me the "Sony Vegas has stopped working" (or Elements, in that case). On the Vegas thing (can't remember the Elements line that it hits before crashing), it crashes on the "Initializing DirectX Plugins" line on the startup (signs of a DirectX issue that could cause other programs to not function correctly, I figure). This also happened after I reinstalled it (I reinstalled it and it first started up fine, but crashed when I tried to feed it certain projects I had or feed projects certain files. Then I went to update it to the current version, and that's when I hit the exact same problem to get me to try reinstalling in the first place).

The site also linked to the Microsoft DirectX Dev Kit, which I have no CLUE how to use or what to do with it to even BEGIN troubleshooting this. I've been trying EVERYTHING (I cleaned out alot of viruses and worms), but to no avail.

Sorry about this, but I had this to add to this, from the error logs, as well:
Faulting application vegas70.exe, version 7.0.0.216, time stamp 0x4637061c, faulting module vp6vfw.dll_unloaded, version 0.0.0.0, time stamp 0x3f7c8caf, exception code 0xc0000096, fault offset 0x03b32a3b, process id 0x1760, application start time 0x01c7cbdf00a6b9d5.

Not sure if this is the right place to post this, but I need some major help.

A friend of mine has the same problem as you trying to install VMS8-Platinum on his Vista. Searching on Google revealed 1-2 more such instances. He found no solution so far.

I had the same issue, one in which I posted on MajorGeeks (the post that led someone to direct me here), and then the other to Astalavista, which I had posted in too in hopes of finding something. None have really led me to any conclusion.

But I may have discovered something weird which may be somewhat causing it indirectly. In the Vista control panel's programs and features, I found something very peculiar: TWO separate instances of Vegas and its media manager installed. Not sure if this is supposed to be this way or not, but one of of each of these programs, I can uninstall no problem, the other it says it can't locate the .msi file of it, even which I repeatedly tell it that it's there (it's the right package I'm directing it to), and then tells me some sort of error of that the msi file isn't there and to make sure that I have access to the file (which I do. I've made sure of that), and it insists that Vegas is still installed somehow, even though I've uninstalled the other instance of it).

Not sure how to get rid of the other "instance" of Vegas, but I'm pretty sure it's related somehow. I have to remember, too, that I've screwed up my machine somehow, too, to the point where I'm considering reinstalling Windows (which I'm also hesitant to do because of the whole product key issues. I bought it (I.E.: everything is legal), but I'm unsure if trying to do that will void the key). Windows Explorer crashes at random times, too, mostly at the worst possible times, though (I WAS going to say that I'm trying to install Vegas again via the MSI pack that Windows insists isn't there to see if that does anything different, but Explorer crashed while reinstalling and it's been "restarting" for five minutes now).

I'll keep you informed. But I do need something concrete.

Could also be that Vegas 7 isn't fully rated for Vista.

I've found little (read: none at all) use for the Media Manager, so if getting rid of that helps your problem, you aren't missing out on anything.

The problem I described actually happens with VMS8, not 7. I think the real problem is the fact that another installed application causes the incompatibility. Could be a driver, or even a DX game or even something like Skype which uses DX to do A/V. So, uninstalling something like that, might fix the problem.

Well, I still did not find out yet if I can even remove the other Vegas, but from what you said, I went and found out what the last thing I uploaded to YouTube was (because I used Vegas for all those vids), and I am going to see if anything I installed after that date could've done it. Might be something else altogether (hopefully it's not anything related to the other issues I'm having on this comp).

Well, I have figured out that it will work if you don't update Vegas to 7.0e (the latest revision). When I did that (it worked when I installed 7.0b), it worked fine (but some of the bugs would remain that wouldn't be fixed, I guess), but when I update to e, it starts again.

I can try the Sony boards, not guaranteed I can get an answer, though.
