Checked out these 3 flicks this weekend.
Quite enjoyed this one. An ensemble movie with multiple storylines and many layers that interwine and overlap to tell several unique stories that are compelling and keep you guessing as to how they'll all unravel and resolve. I think Orlando Bloom works best in a large group, and though he's the star, there are numerous other standouts and performances including Bill Paxton as a shady businessman evading fraud inditements. Beautiful surroundings of The Cayman Islands help make this a visual piece, but it's also shot with style, utilizing handheld and a lot of focus-pulling. Jealously from me comes in the fact that it was penned and directed by 24 year old Freddy Flowers, a Cayman Island resident. Worth a rental.
Another good film. I like Zach Braff. He seems to do a great job in every film I see him in. He doesn't disappoint in this either, and along with a great cast highlighted by Tom Wilkinson, we're given an insight into the lives of regular folk trying to make it by in this world. It's penned by Paul Haggis, so it's a thought provoking story with a message, or at least something to think about. If you've ever contemplating cheating on a loved one you should probably watch this flick. I watched it with my girlfriend, and she liked it, but it's not a friendly story with a happy all questions answered ending, so she wasn't totally digging it, and now she thinks I'm probably a cheating bastard.
Worth a rental, but you may end up in the doghouse.
I knew going in this one would suck. Unfortunately I was bombarded by advertisements for it so much on tv I caved and rented it. I'm not sure if it's as bad as Mind Hunters or not, but it becomes more and more clear all the time that Renny Harlin cares more about being a working director than picking good projects. Visually it's gorgeous(though I'm getting sick of people hanging out in the dark all the time when alone), the spfx and cgi are quite good, but other than that it's a hollow shell of a film that serves only the purpose of attempting to make a buck off of mentioning it has some affiliation to Underworld.
Extra Notes:
- every big moment and basically every plot point all happen in the trailers for the movie. There is nothing new in the film.
- the abilites that the covenant have is nicely explained by titling at the beginning of the film that says "no one exactly knows how they got their power..."
- it seemed like almost all of the film was ADR'ed, with the lead actors voice seeming fake in a lot of instances.
- un or maybe intentionally homo-erotic. I think they were trying to contend with Top Gun. Sure, young teenage girls may go crazy for the hunks in the movie, but I bet another demographic may like it too.
Don't rent, wait for tv - maybe if you're 13-15 range you might dig it for it's action and spfx.
