have you lost friends in your pursuit of a career in film?

Have you lost friends and acquaintances? I have - either thru professional jealousy or complete lack of understanding and support for the struggle.

Then it gets all weird because then you work in the industry where its all mega ego inflation if you do something half right until you screw up.

Anyone else had this happen to them?

'Depends on your definition of the word 'friend.' I've made some great and true friends in the struggle, and I'm also not talking with a few folks anymore. Someone may pretend to like you, but when they show their hind parts, they just proved that they were never really a friend, and I don't miss 'em a bit. It's a net plus for me here -- my numbers are up.

No. I can't think of what I could have done to lose friends over professional choices, but the situation would have to involve one of us being jerks. Meaning I'm in the wrong or they weren't all that great of friends to start with, which I would say doesn't count and shouldn't be worried about. I can't really offer any advice specific to you since I don't know the situation, but good luck with whatever it might be.

Sounds like you're having a tough time with something, though.....sorry to hear that.....

Totally. Some of them were just douches I was working with, who I am no longer working with; others are actual friends where the relationship is strained and non-communicative, though they both sort of reached out recently. I would say I totally had a hand in putting our friendship where its at, though these things take two. So those two are the only ones I regret.

Sometimes people want to move in on something and take over the project, and you shouldn't roll over for that $hit; more insidious is the one who rides on your shoulder and whispers in your ear so they can feel like they have some power in the situation. I listened for a while before I basically cut that one out of my life.

Yes.
Filmmaking is a quest that you must understand and want.
I have personally found that some people do not understand the time spent in a creative process without visibly seeing the rewards.
It is all about the discipline, commitment, and the work.
These are three things that people sometimes avoid.

Then there are of course the ones that try and find an easy way to benefit themselves through your efforts.

Just have to want it and know it is obtainable.

I've lost friends after I realized they were only my friends as long as production dictated that they needed my free/low paying "i'm helping you out because we're friends" services.

Which is sad. But that's life. Hope things get better for you.

i have a project that got me big gigs and has kickstarted my career into overdrive and some people didnt like the project and they either stopped talking to me or when i do talk to them they dont want to talk about the project. its just a regular film project too - its not like its porn or offensive - so obviously they have drifted from me since i cant talk about this important part of my world.

Also - i have met and even dated girls who didnt grok working on film projects. They like the end result, but the main part they had no idea how to be supportive - even though i was more than willing and interested and listened to their trials and tribulations.

C'est la vie eh?
