Have you ever missed a great gig because you were working a crap gig?

Tomorrow I would have been shooting a playboy playmate in STL... but I was in the middle of another job and didn't answer my phone... or return the call soon enough to get the gig.

If this thread has a life until Tuesday I'll post pics of the missed opportunity... but tonight I still have some beer to cry into.

Have you ever missed a good gig because you were already in the middle of a crap job? This has happened to me a few times now...

Last year I missed a Discovery shoot because I was working with some "green" loser... (who never paid I might add)...

*ugh* who wants to work with a recent playboy playmate anyway? :crybaby:

You don't need some no-name like her. SHE'S the one missing out!

.....

Does she still need to hire someone?

I was asked once, if I was interested in being an event photographer covering the American Society of Cinematographers Awards Ceremony in Hollywood... But I was already committed that weekend as a DP on a 'low/no-budget' short film. It was extremely hard , but I did the right thing and stuck to my previous commitment. I would have been a complete jerk to abandon my production team just a week out, to do what I wanted.

I figure doing the 'right' thing will hopefully pay off someday later... or not.

ps: I'm still waiting to be paid my $100/day deferred payment. I was basically volunteering my services. :P

It's the story of my life

Jobs, gigs, parties, my twenties... lol

Yeah dude the feeling sucks. Commitments huh.

Well I actually did miss 3 maxim maxim hometown hottie shoots with my friend because of an indian movie with a director thats never done a film before.

Missed out on Starship Troopers II because I was stuck doing jury duty.

All things considered, maybe that wasn't such a bad thing after all.

every freelancer finds himself at a crap gig when a good gig is down the street. It's the uneployeed who wish they could get a crap gig though.
The glass is half full here.

So what we need to do is develop a list of trickle-down contacts, so we always have someone to push the crap gigs onto so we can take the good ones, right?

Yes. And in return they kick back the gigs they can't handle your way.
I use to have a "client" that would try to milk his ten percent out of me for gigs I did FOR HIM!
lol
Dude was a natorious clock miker who knew nothing about the job but much about how corporate america needs to free themselves of dollars. Today, he is among the very few left in the St Louis market who still gets work from Anheuser-Busch.
Just goes to show ya, talent aint always what they are purchasing. Sometimes the best write off they can get is what they are after.

That's what I do. When something better than what I'm on comes along, I find someone available who won't embarrass me, tell the producer I'm off, but here's this guy who will take over and handle everything for you...

...except that one time there were tears. After seeing that I kind of felt like I had to stay.

It seems everyone wants to shoot the same weeks even if its way in advance. It never fails when we get a RED gig we get 2 others wanting that same date and no one can budge on moving.

this is why editors work so many doubles. If I go a week with no work, man the last thing I'm gonna do is turn down any. One really can get three days worth of work done in 30 hours.

Day job here, many missed ops to work on medium budget music vids being shot in metro Detroit. But I am constantly thankful that I have full-time work in an industry and workplace that I love. Oh and benefits are awesome too...

Missed gig... Miss June 2008... Juliette Frette... 'nuff said :crybaby:
