i shot some footage in avc-intra 100
1920x1080i
im using fcp 7
log and transfered in the new "AVC NATIVE" option

FRAME SIZE: 1920X1080
VID RATE: 29.97 fps
COMPRESSOR: APPLE AVC INTRA 100M 1080i60 = VIDEO
DATA RATE: 13.9MBps
PIXEL ASPECT: SQUARE
FEILD DOMINANCE: UPPER(ODD)

FRAME SIZE: 1440X1080
VID RATE: 29.97fps
COMPRESSOR: APPLE PRO RES 422 (HQ) =SEQUENCE SETTINGS
PIXEL RATIO: HD(1440X1080
FIELD DOMINANCE:NONE

My problem is every time i add a clip to the sequence i have to render it to veiw it in the canvas. So basically i have to render every clip i place in the timeline.

also is 1440x1080 the biggest frame size and pixel aspect fcp 7 can handle? the squence setting is that but my footage is 1920?

if u can answer my questions u will for ever be known as the man!

thanks everyone:angry:

I do not actually have an answer for you, probably more of an opinion as I cannot confirm this as fact, but I dealt with sort of the same thing...

I imported an AVC intra clip as a test and was totally surprised to see the green render bar above the footage in the timeline. I am running FCP 7 on a quad core iMac with 4gbs Ram so tech wise have an optimal system for FCP. I could view it, but if I was to add more shots I'm sure it would not run smoothly. I was baffled as to why I had the render bar, and though I tried to search out an answer to something I was doing wrong, the only thing I came up with was "sure fcp can do avc intra, but it is very limited."

FCP wants PRO RES. It is optimized for Pro Res, especially for the full final cut studio workflow.

I'm not sure what version of fcp you are running or how powerful your system is, but that could play a part in the having to render to view. (red render bar?)

Log and Transfer the native AVC Intra files to keep the original file of the footage, then use media manager to make copies of the files as Pro Res to edit with in FCP, Color, Soundtrack Pro etc. If you don't want to bother with native files, change the preferences in the log and transfer window to pro res right away. Preference pane is the little box in the top right corner of the log and transfer window.
