Have 1" 480i that needs to go to blu ray for theatrical showing.

This looks like it'll be messy. I have a one shot theatrical screening of a 20 year old movie that was shot 1:33 in 16mm neg. Made a transfer at the time to 1" and it seemed to hold up ok. Also have the a/b neg rolls, but think the cost of scanning, grading etc would outweigh the benefits. Left out the part where I need a blu ray to play on the theaters server system of digital projection.

Then scan the film in at higher resolution, at additional cost?

If the question is "how do I make 1" NTSC video tape full HD Blu-Ray quality", I'm afraid you won't get something for nothing.

Unless you're in a large city like New York, LA or London, you're going to have a lot of trouble finding a dub house with a working 1" machine. Also, after 20 years of storage, there's no guarantee that your tape will play correctly.

If you still have the negative A & B rolls, you should have that transfered to 1080. Then you can have that made into a Blu-Ray or DCP.

Or it might be cheaper just to have them strike a new 35mm print.

I remember threading 1" tape through a Sony BVH-2000 years ago. I'm glad to use QuickTime files now though :)

Don't quite see how they would scan or telecine a/b as there is black leader where the other reel's image is and that would get recorded as well. I guess making another answer print would be the only way and cost too much. Still it seems like there are places that uprez 480i to 1080 using Teranex or faroujda gear.

And cut out the splice marks... was there not an answer print done the first time you can use? Make sure any edits you make don't change sync.

thanks for the tips. Yes I know the sync is a potential problem that I need to keep an eye on. answer print is long gone.
