I know this is not the first ultra sub notebooks, but I just found this on some of the junk mail advertising in my post today (it was a national electrical retailer)

The Asus Eee PC, its tiny, uses solid state hard drive, Intel 900Mhz, 512MB, wi-fi, all the ports you could dream of, etc, preinstalled Linux with 40+ software (usually skpye, office suite etc).

Anyways, the reason I took interest is the small price tag, its aorund £200, thats something like $400~ish

I mean its great for carrying around like a diary,

I had to lug my laptop to Uni, and its not pleasent, I'm not foolish enough to carry it inside a "rob me" laptop case, so I usually put it inside my normal school side bag, but THAT means I have leave out books, because it weights about 3.6KG just for the laptop.

Its soo tempting, so very tempting...

what do you guys think?

has anyone got one?

whats your exeperience of laptop "portablility" ?

i use a sony vaio t350 (12.something" screen) and find its as small as I'm comfortable using and doesnt get in the way as far as transporting goes. EEEPC looks interesting though, my wife might like that as most of her use is internet/email... for the price I might have to get her one to free up the laptop.

I was tempted to get one for writing, which I generally like to do away from my office in coffee shops or in a library. For this it would be perfect. Wish it was a little cheaper. Right now I use a palm with a foldout keyboard.

It is a dream come true for scribes (with a possible slight learning curve with the 90% size keyboard)

Oh and the wi-fi kicks much ass...

Edit:

The friggin' thing fits in a wee portable DVD case...

I have an acer aspire one that I won in a video conpetition, since then I've used it's card readers to offload the sdhc card that the hmc151 uses. I'ts also great for internet and as Batutta said it's great for writing. This small computer can even play a avchd clip (not realtiime but nearly) and the are great dvd players (even if they don't have dvd tray....).

I picked up an MSI Wind about two months ago and couldn't be happier with it. Beautiful 10.2" screen, XP (but also runs Linux and OSX without any problems), Intel Atom 1.6Ghz, and only weighs 2.5 lbs.

It runs extremely cool to the touch. I've actually been able to do some light video editing with it. Not bad for $350US.

I'll take a hefty FAST laptop any day and work on my biceps while carrying it then have something smaller and slower.

I guess it all depends on what your doing, the work I do, to be honest would easly break any high end laptop, that's why I have a workstation to do the 'heavly lifting' but for net/email and word processing you don't need that kind of horsepower..

I'd love to have a powerhouse Laptop that could edit, capture, play games and DVDs, but I don't have the cash. What I have now, is an old Laptop that was given to me, dead battery, no Internet, not much get up and go. That can be fixed up to do a bit more, i.e. new battery, get the connectivity issue fixed, and it would be sufficient for what I do- writing, surfing, email, etc. Lugging it around isn't much of an issue, I'm still healthy enough to carry the extra 5 lbs or so... just looking at my expanded waistline proves that. What I am concerned about is comfort of use. My eyes aren't up to reading tiny keys, and my fingers don't like tiny keys either. That is mostly what keeps me away from those tiny portables.

I love these. I've been thinking about getting one for a while. But being a consultant I have to have a real laptop too. And with one of these, I feel like I would just wind up carrying two laptops around with me...
