Hast Harmony Korine gone mainstream?

Just when you thought it was safe to enter the art house theater to watch obtuse, unwatchable, and downright schlock...

Harmony Korine brings "Spring Breakers"(2012) to the screen...

J:

Thanks so much for turning me on to this modern masterpiece. I had been despairing the decline of contemporary culture until the Spring Breakers trailer reinvorgorated my faith - now I won't have to sleep through Godard this year in order to get my fix of High Art.

Best,

Dennis

Anyone with thoughts on Spring Breakers?

Kind of a slow burn for me. I wasn't totally digging it in the moment, but 24 hours later, I could see it again. Great soundtrack. A nice mix of aggressive and ambient electronic music. Probably the best thing about the film.

I saw the film at the theater and really liked it. I would not agree with the title of this thread and say that Harmony Korine has gone mainstream; not at all. I think that "Spring Breakers" will be looked back on as a seminal film for its style and as an example of Post Modern Cinema. I am a student of Art History, totally self taught without formal education on the subject, and have been struggling to grasp the Post Modern aesthetic. I went to the cinema and saw "Spring Breakers" and very shortly after that i went and saw "Upstream Color". Actually, I went and saw "Upstream Color" three times on the big screen. After seeing those two movies I no longer have any problems grasping the concept of Post Modernism, especially as to how it applies to Cinema.

"Spring Beakers" has a very simple story that actually becomes more than a tad implausible at the end, but that does not matter. It is a movie where the crux of the experience is the execution and the STYLE. The film washes over you with its style and, actually, it is impossible to separate the story from the style. The Cinematography (By Benoit Debie http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0213424/ ) is outstanding. I may just buy the disc to study the look of the film. The acting is also very good. James Franco does a great job I thought. I guess that the female cast has a long history in contemporary "Teenie Booper" culture and that their casting in this film was against type and, hopefully set them up for more mature roles. i don't know about that as I not have any knowledge of that segment of popular culture. That may be somewhat limiting to me appreciating the full importance of "Spring Breakers" but I am going to say, "Whatever" to that. The female cast did a good job. I liked the film and look forward to seeing it again. I recommend it to all filmmakers.

There is one scene that I have to call out for special consideration. The "Robbery" scene was %&#$ing brilliant. I think that every filmmaker should watch that scene and study it for its narrative expedience and stylistic flair.

Finally saw this the other day and quiet liked it.

That said maybe the four girls in bikinis had a lot to do with keeping my interest but acting across the whole film was excellent. Franco had a pretty out there character and accent so just shows how good that dude is that I wasn't ever thinking its an actor putting on this facade.

I also really loved some of the editing. $$$ SPOILER $$$$ for example the awesome use of the Brittney Spears song.

$$$$ SPOILER $$$$ was kids bummed out Gomez left the movie so early. I was really surprised how good she was.

Thanks for the replies so far and the imgur link is interesting, no doubt.

I call this a WOOT movie (wife out of town) Probably would not be her cup of tea. But a good watch & turn up the surround sound.

There are some great looking shots in this film. Such as the girls frolicking on the beach at sunset. Lots of color in the daytime shots like the girls' bikinis. Just looking on IMDB, i guess this was shot on film versus digital.

Not to be cliche, but James Franco delivered the goods. Great performance.

Also, in a roundabout way, Spring Breakers made me nostalgic for being young. Minus the drug-fueled crime sprees, of course.

This is one of those movies that I'll probably enjoy when I'm flipping through the channels and there's nothing else on so I end up watching it, but I can't get the enthusiasm to go out of my way to watch it.

It's not a dumb spring break flick Gillvane if that helps. Though I'd say it is a movie you'll probably love or hate.

Yeah, I didn't see it when it was in theaters... because it's not the Wife's kind of movie... so I'll have to wait for the DVD/BD and then wait for the Wife to be out of town... she hasn't been traveling much these days...

Ah well...
