Has being on IMDB helped you?

Yeah, same here. Held a camcorder for a friend's indie project and he got carried away with crediting his crew...

This is what I'm affraid of, I don't want to be branded forever in cyberspace for helping out / working on what's his name's little indie film that turned out really bad.

I guess indies think they are doing you a favor or an honor to be forever branded in cyberspace for being a part of some really bad movie.

I just found out I was listed in a film as an associate producer, it shows up in the movie credits but not on imdb thank god. Two other features I worked on I asked to be credited under a name from a character in a 70's tv series, I think I'm going to stick with the 70's alias for a while :Drogar-Love(DBG):

I'm not really for hire (just do my own projects for the most part) so no it doesn't really do me any good.

Oddly enough, that particular litttle indie seems to be doing surprisingly well, festival-wise. But it's still not what any real cinematographer would regard as something to brag about.

Interesting thread...

Today I was filling out an application for insurance on an upcoming film project. There was a check box for whether or not I had an IMDB profile.

ha ha! Well I don't have one yet anyways, so. Good to know, though.

I thought it would make it more likely I'd get coverage, however... I assume if you're new in the game and using an insurance company for the first time, an IMDB profile gives you more credibility then if you're just some geek off the streets.

Aside from checking your credits a la an online resume when deciding who to call in to interview, I think that's probably true.

That happens all the time. I'm very specific as I usually list myself as the cinematographer and the person holding the camera as "Camera Operator" unless they actually do cinematography work. I have had people ask to be credited in certain ways.

All I can say is thank goodness I have a unique name...because I see tons of people who have like "John Smith" as their name and have all sorts of credits constantly popping up on their profile that isn't theirs.
LOL, there's only one Nathyn Brendan Masters.

I was talking to an agent one time and throwing names around, every name I bought up the agent looked up on IMDB as we were talking. People do use IMDB.

Even calling me camera operator for the purposes of that shoot is over-pimping it (although admittedly literally accurate). A fellow holding a prosumer camcorder on a shoot like that one is - to me - a fellow holding a prosumer camcorder.

Just my take; of course I realize that there are projects shot with 'prosumer camcorders' where the DP is in every way properly titled a DP and the operator properly called a camera operator - just not the particular sort of project I have in mind, that I was referencing, on the scale of what I'm accustomed to.
