if you can roll to tape at the same time, i guess DV/HDV you can you'll be ok but its pot luck weather the thing will record or not

I haven't used one (yet), but I don't think I would rely on any of the camera mountable direct to disk recorders. If nothing else, reliability of a hard drive that is in operation while it is not stationary is not a given. Additionally, on the whole, these devices are all (that I know of) overly complex solutions for the function they perform (basically, full blown computers internally, despite being dumbed down to just slightly souped up file transfer devices).
