putting a half moon focusing function at the top of the DVX flip out LCD.
I think it would work and rock.

it would function as a manual control, but you would have a choice of extending you arm to the end of the lens or dialing on top of the LCD flip out-

But that's a servo control, not a manual one. The focus ring on the DVX isn't 100% manual, but it's pretty close.

There is a fairly large difference between the use of the term "manual" here. In one case, you seem to be referencing the difference between "manual" and a camera driven automatic mode. Where in the other case, David is referencing a direct connection between the focus ring and the moving elements in the lens assembly and a servo driven "manual" actuation control.

If the control were placed such as you have advocated, despite being a user operated control ("manual" in your frame of reference) it would necessitate the use of a servo and would likely be unusable for manual focus pulling (such as done when rack focusing between different subjects).
