Has anybody else noticed? Vegas = no problems?

I've been reading both the Vegas forum and the PPRO forum and it's making it easy to return the PPRO for Vegas.

Look down the thread list... then go to the next page and look at it... and so on.

Seems like Vegas users just need to figure out how to do things within the program while many PPRO users are frequently dealing with actual software problems and disasters.

I'd like to hear somebody put up any actual PROBLEMS they've had with Vegas that weren't just a matter of figuring out HOW to do something...

Tomorrow is Monday and that means PPRO is heading back unless somebody can give me any reason to doubt Vegas. In my other thread all the support of PPRO was based on not knowing Vegas or my years of experience with PPRO. I love you guys, but that's not a convincing argument. :)

Matt, I'm not buying the HVX until there is Vegas support. I gave that reason to a friend of mine just yesterday and he is convinced. Although a beginner, he is a Final Cut pro user.

LOL.
Yeah....Getting Keyframes to null at zero vs 1.00 in Pan/Crop. Can't default it to zero. It's not something you'll use every day, but...
There are also a few minor issues with some AMD processor/motherboard combinations and Decklink, but if you're not running a large RAID with uncompressed vid and a Decklink card, with a specific set of AMD procs and a couple specific mobos...it won't matter.
As far as bugs, there are darn few. Definitely no disasters. The Vegas software has no legacy code dating back years, which most of the other NLE's have at some level or another. Vegas has also never had to deal with a HAL (hardware application layer) which in itself has been a major benefit to the application.
Vegas is simply solid. In terms of solidity/stability and feature set, there is no other NLE that comes close at this time.
But that's sorta like saying "I love you guys" and might not be a convincing enough argument for many. If the above two troubles are the worst you can point to, then hopefully that's the more convincing argument.

When rotoing there's an annoying crash bug - when dealing with more than 200 keyframes... very obnoxious, teaches you to save often when rotoscoping larger projects

Thanks for everyone's input. Yeah I realize that it may sound stupid that I didn't want to download the Trial PPRO just to check it out... but I didn't want to be swayed by that. Knowing I'm more comfortable in premiere I didn't want to let myself use that crutch of acceptance. When I ran premiere I didn't have non-stop problems... often times it worked good FOR A WHILE... so if I load up the trial and I feel familiar in it... and I like a few extra things... I was afraid I'd just say what the heck and load it up.

There's a common saying that power is nothing without control... and for editing speed is nothing without stability.

It doesn't matter where you're comfortable. The first time your NLE stabbs you in the back 12 hours before a project is due you start looking at things differently.

This is the point for me where I'm closing that door and not looking back... I was actually HOPING to hear some opinions from somebody who is as opinionated about premiere as I am about Oktava mics... and then I could see the shimmer of hope... but instead I mostly got endorsements of premiere based on limited knowledge of Vegas. I've seen several projects that you guys have done with Vegas and I know a couple of you are actually making a decent living with your Vegas editing.

All that's left is to take my opening advice and look at all the subjects for threads in the Vegas forum and then the Premiere forum. Seriously... scroll down the list in both forums... that puts the fear of lost time and sanity in me.

I'd rather learn to run in new shoes then keep on walking in the pair that feel comfortable.

The only problem with Vegas, and I do mean the ONLY problem, is lack of native HVX support. As soon as that's rectified, it will be, once again, unparalleled.

As for your decision, that's irrelevant, since Premiere Pro doesn't have native HVX support either.

For use with a DVX, Vegas is unquestionably the best.

Well . . .

I'd like to be able to keyframe 3D effects on the clip level rather than on the track level.

But, yeah.

PPRO gone... Vegas on the way as soon as they get PPRO. So I gotta' wait a week to get busy. Bummer, but thanks for the insights.

This feels like breaking up with a cute girl that you're used to... but that always gets you into trouble and just seems bad for you. We've all been there.

I'm excited to discover all the new adventure with the new chick. (I've played with Vegas before... I HAVE an older version... but having Premiere at my disposal I'd just PLAY in Vegas but work in Premiere... now I'm taking that crutch away and I expect to be a lot better off for it.)

One thing's reasonably certain... if I can get a sci-fi flick done by the 31st my NLE probably won't crash out on the 30th. That's good enough reason all by itself.

Matt--I'm THERE right now!!! I can't believe it, but I'm dumping one of the prettiest girlfriends I've ever had. C'est la vie . . .

I just downloaded the Vegas 6.0 trial and installed it. It took me about 5 minutes to figure out how to do a dissolve (yeah, I'm slow) with no help/tutorial. HOLY SH!T! Premiere Pro can go straight to hell. I'm switching to Sony Vegas immediately. I just LIKE it. I've had Acid Pro for years, and the interface is similar and just as simple and straightforward. Now I see what all the fuss is about. It's a great interface and pretty darn intuitive. And boy, does it run NICE on a 3GHz Pentium HT w/2GB RAM! Screw Adobe--I'm going all Sony suite now ('cept for After Effects Pro, which I already own). It's also great that I won't need to wait for DVCPRO100 support for Vegas since it looks like I'm jumping the HVX camp and probably getting the Sony DSR450 with its plain ole' DV bitstream. Good decision, Matt!

I like Vegas, bought in at NAB a few years ago, right as they were announcing support for the DVX... great decision, use it every day. Before that I had a copy of "Blade", the DV baby of Speed Razor. Quite possibly the worst code ever written by man.

I'm still using Vegas version 5, because by the time last NAB rolled around I had already made the decision to ditch the Z1 and didn't see the need to upgrade based on the new feature list which was HDV heavy.

Of course there are things I don't like. Mostly a problem for animators or those working with image sequences...

Image sequence import support is spotty. Try to replace a clip made from an image sequence and it will only load one frame, not the entire sequence. This has been a bug for both Vegas 4 and 5. Is it fixed in 6?

Image sequence export is only available from a script. No support for fields in the export, and proper aspect ratios are hit or miss. Very strange and half-baked.

No freedom to add or subtract 3:2 with image sequences. Maybe this has changed?

EDL support and batch capture/redigitize not at the level of Avid, FCP, Media 100, etc.

Other than this specialized issues, it's a smooth ride. Announce full and complete P2 support at NAB and I'm a happy camper. Don't, and I'm onto a different NLE as quick as I ditched the Z1 for the HVX... The HVX will be best in class for a camera, I'm hoping Vegas will stay best in class for a software NLE.

Well, hopefully that's fixed in version 6. Is it? How long ago was version 6 released? When is the next major upgrade (whole or half version number) expected for Sony Vegas?

Understand I'm ONLY talking about aspect ratios and fielding problems in image sequence exports, NOT in any of the other movie export options... it simply can't be used to export, say, 720 by 486 interlaced without frame server work-arounds.

Image sequence exporting in Vegas is strange. I've never understood why it isn't just a standard option instead of a script that must be run, and why it has the problems it has. I don't think it's fixed in 6 because I saw a series of posts on a Vegas forum from some poor soul trying to make it work.

I often use Vegas for my dome show image sequence editing, where my proxies are 480 by 480 .png sequences and the finals are up to 4096 by 4096. The nice thing about Vegas is that it doesn't care about the actual size of the images, just their relative sizes. All I have to do is swap out the little proxies for the full sized frames and everything works the same way. Realtime at 480 by 480, and ah, not so realtime at 4K...
