It's pretty interesting for a one shot film. Apparently a lot of CGI was employed to smooth things out.
I vaguely remember reading that the DP was up for being recognized for an award and the Director was against it, possibly because of the CGI or more personal reasons.
It's worth checking out, but it's the kind of film that I don't want to see again.

I think it is an amazing feat. It is a tad drawn out, but a wonder to watch. The dvd is great. The behind the scenes comentary and making of if a great lesson in filmaking.
I have not heard about the CGI, not sure what was done, but none of that is mentioned in the disk, although they could be trying to sweep it under the rug.
The fact that they had one day to make it, and a director and a DP who had to speak through a translator in it self is rather remarkable.

Impressive, but not good. It's not really narrative. Think of it as a moving painting. But very beautiful at parts. They went nuts with extras, 3 orchestras, insane amounts of expensive costumes. If you know Russian history you'll appreciate it more because you follow the narrative walking through the museum in Russia, I can't remember the name, walking past different scenes in Russian history.
The behind the scenes documentary is better than the actual film I think.

It is worth seeing, IMHO, if you like Russian stories, because the Russian filmmakers, they do love to hang on actor's faces. It's PATHOS Moscovite style. And, if you like that sort of thing (I do), then you'll love it.
And because you are a geek reading this forum, you will like even better the 'making of' segment.
These people did it because *they could do it.* I like that.
