harsh footage

hi all, recently i shot a band in rehearsal in a pretty bright room and after editing and making the footage black and white i was pretty happy with how the footage was looking on my computer.
Unfortunately i made a beginners mistake/ dumb decision to shoot the rehearsal at 60i in scene file 1.
after i transferred the footage to dvd i was shocked at just how clear and crisp it looked on the tv, too crisp in fact, to the point of being harsh and taking any of the atmosphere away.
Right now i only have imovie to edit and am quite likely too after 3 weeks in Europe pretty much sucked me dry, but does anyone have any tips, tricks, ideas of plugins other than the icky "old movie" plugin to make the footage "dirtier" and less harsh.

I got my start by doing this. Take the footage you have and play it out onto a TV, better yet, transfer it to VHS, then play that onto a TV. Work with the image controls on the TV and reshoot it with your camera... With the VCR, you have motion control, i.e. slo-mo plus saturation control, contrast control plus a few other controls. I know it sounds kooky, but trust me... it will take the edge off of 60i footage and give it an "avant gard" look... if you work at it. I spent a summer with a musician a consumer VHS camera and two pro-sumer VHS VCRs and shot three original music videos using this technique. When we were done, we got a contract for commercials with the first client we pitched. Did over 27 commercials for them.

Creativity is not technology bound.

Believe it or not i actually did toy with the idea of doing this and by your recommendation i shall now definitely try this, thanks

Here ya go. 60i to 24p conversion. It is Quicktime based and works brilliantly with iMovie. http://www.dvfilm.com/maker/
