Hardware vs. software filters?

Which is better glass filters or software filters? I wanted to get some Tiffen glass filers but I also found on their site that they do have a software filters too. What are the advantages and disadvantages of the two products?

You need real filters only for exposure these days. Polarizer, NDs and ND grads are all you need.

For creative looks, why commit to the look as you shoot? What if the client decides they hate the Black Pro Mist look in post and you shot with a Black Pro Mist? You are S.O.L., right?

Check out Magic Bullet Looks. I am in love with this application and IMHO, it is more versatile and interesting than the Tiffen Digital Filters.

As far as I am concerned, all shoot is now is getting the lighting, exposure and composition correct. Go nuts with the actual color and look in post.

Thanks for the suggestion. You may have saved me hundreds of dollars! By the way, is Boris Continuum 4 or 5 worth any consideration? How is Boris Continuum compare to Magic Bullet? One more thing, when you said Magic Bullet, are you referring to the "Suite" or the "Editor" or both?

Hi:

While many get great results with Boris software, I, for one think that they have the most arcane menus and workflows, they are unlike anything else on the market and very non-intuitive. OTOH, Magic Bullet Looks has the best interface on the market, I wish more developers (hello Apple!) would take some lessons from The Orphanage. Having a great interface means you will actually look forward to using the product rather than dreading it because it's so weird to get around in.

The Magic Bullet Looks Suite is nice but if you don't need the other three programs (I already had Colorista and the DV to HD tool), you can save a few hundred dollars but just getting Looks for $399.00.

It is a superb tool for getting any look you want. It ships with over 100 presets, all of which are a great leaping off point to develop your own awesome looks. I will be surprised if people don't begin trading recipes for their looks or if people begin selling them.

My favorite piece of software in a long time.
