Hardware Sugestions??

Hello,   Basically, I'm going to take a $6,000 loan out from a bank... I'm not sure how but Ive got to do it soon....  That plus aproximatly $1,000 of my own cash and I've got $7,000 to spend on equipment....

I would just like some sugestions on what to purchase.. This is what I was thinking.....

DVX100... or now im thinking DVX100a which is about $3,400 right? so takes a chunk of cash...

Next I was thinking pana Anamorphic adaptor.. thats $800

Next I was thinking Chroziel 411-53p 4x4 Matte box... now thats $1,800.....    now after that stuff That leaves me with about $800 ..... And I also want good audio...

So now ive got a problem...  I was thinking .. is it better to have 2 mics? cause if I only use 1 mic doesnt it only come out through 1 speaker.....   So I was originaly thinking of getting the Seinhiezer Me66 .... but I have been reading and I was thinking that mabee I should get something better So I was thinking  Drop the Matte box... that gives me $1,800 to play with.... So I was thinking of getting a Sennheiser MKH416.   Now is that a good Mic??? its gotta be for $1,000  bucks right???   I mean Im just looking for good audio... Cause I cant stand watching a great looking picture with amature crap sounding audio.... It just upsets me ....  Now if I got a high end mic would I want 2????   but then I also have to think about getting a boom and all that other stuff for it...  I also was thinking about getting a Bogen 503 Head with some nice legs....  So here are my revised List options.....

Option 1:
1 DVX100a - $3,400
1 Anamorphic Adapter- $800
1 Chroziel 411-53p 4x4 Matte Box- $1,800
1 Sennhiezer Me 66 combo thingy- $400
1 Bogen 503 Head with decent legs - $400
Total : $6,800  Now thats counting what ever site I get it from gives me free shiping considering its such a huge purchase....

Option 2:
1 DVX100a - $3,400
1 Anamorphic Adapter- $800
1 Sennheiser MKH416- $1,050
1 Bogen 503 head with legs- $400
1 One of those fabric matte boxes- $think there 200
Total: $5,850... Gives me about $1,000 to play with in this Option.

Option 3:
1 DVX100a - $3,400
1 Anamorphic Adapter- $800
2 Sennheiser MKH416- $2,100
1 Bogen 503 head with legs- $400
1 One of those fabric matte boxes- $think there 200
Total: A little over $7,000

Option 4
1 DVX100a - $3,400
1 Anamorphic Adapter- $800
1 Chroziel 411-53p 4x4 Matte Box- $1,800
2 Sennhiezer Me 66 combo thingys- $800

Ok, obviously these Options are a little unrealistic because I need some help.. here is the help I need....  Now with audio Im also gonna need wires and some boom poles....  I dont know much about them, where to get them.. what ones I need or how much they cost....

Also I was considering getting a field monitor to view wide screen as I film... But im also not too concerned about that because I like to color correct in post anyways and I what I see on a monitor probly wont be what Im gonna use in the out come anyways....

Also...  I dont know much about filters... I wouldnt know what ones to get where to get them how much they cost and so on....

So I need a little professional help please.......    Basically Im looking for GREAT quality picture with the ability to do some smooth moving shots... for that I figured Id buy one of those tripod wheel thinggys that attach to the bogen 503 with legs and wheel that around as a dolly like thingy....

So....  to sum this all up....   I'm a student...  $7,000 is alot of money to me..  Ill be fine paying it off monthly but I dont want to waist money that I dont have to....

If you took time to read this incredibly long post thank you very much... But This is serious and I need some serious opinions on what I should purchase.  I am looking for a list of things and prices where to get them ... and by that I mean everything like what wires to buy for my mics to connect to the camera and where I can find those... and also little things like batterys and a case for everything... I need a list of Everything I should buy .. Including all the little items .. wheres the best place to get them.. whats it gonna cost me...

I really appreciate any help....  Thank you so much....

Re: Hardware Sugestions??

No, I dont *need* it... I'm just wondering what kind of quality is the Me66.. I heard its a good *starting mic* and I dont want crummy audio... I just absolutly cant stand to hear crappy audio....

Re: Hardware Sugestions??

It's a good mic. I use it daily. As far as the 411-53p, remember you also have to buy the 85mm-72mm stepdown ring, rods support system, center mounting bracket, and also a sidewings kit if you want that option. The 503 is a great head. Pretty smooth considering it's sub-$300.

Re: Hardware Sugestions??

Also, more than one mic is going to require a different mounting rig. If you're doing a stereo setup, you can position the mics in an X/Y array, M-S, etc. Stereo can be pretty effective, but a setup hastle.

I personally only use stereo setups for live performance recording, using a couple neumanns in an X/Y. I'm curious, Anyone use one on the dvx? I'd rather keep my dialogue in one channel and pan it in post if need be...

Re: Hardware Sugestions??

I would drop the anamorphic adapter and save 800.00.
The New DVX100a has an anamorphic setting, so unless you are transfereing to film you don't have to have the small increase in resolution it gives you. You can always add it latter if you are unhappy with the "squeeze" function of the new DVX100.

Re: Hardware Sugestions??

A single mic will not come out of one speaker if you set your inputs properly. You can record it to both tracks.

Re: Hardware Sugestions??

I would have to agree with Vampiar_Ent and Kai. The ME-66 is definitely a good starting mic. I think that at this point, the 416 mic would be almost unnecessary. It's high quality, but the ME-66 is not far off at all. Your purchase options are good, very well thought out. I think Option 1 might be your best bet. The Chrosziel matte box can't be beat, I wish I had one. Anyhow, good luck on the purchase.

Re: Hardware Sugestions??

Ok,

Thanks for the sugestions...

Now I think that the 411-53p comes with rodd support.. this is what saferseas offers....

Package #4 CinePack Anamorphic Kit
AG-DVX100 Cine DP's Package
Complete $1795

-Chrosziel 411-53P Matte Box Kit w/2 Stage Filter Holder and French Flag
-Chrosziel DVX100 15MM Rod Support System

When you purchase this matte box from them along with the Ana they modify the lens to fit the matte box... that cost 200 dollars...  So im not sure about the step down ring you were talking about... Any more info on it would be great... thanks.

Ok,

Some one also said that I should not get the Ana... But from everything I have seen on this site... the best looking videos all used the ana....

Now this is what I was thinking:

Dvx100a
ana adapter
sennhiezer me66 combo thingy * can some one reccomend a good windscreen*
A boom pole *can some one recommend a good one , and where to find it*
Some wires for the mic *what type do I need , where can I get them*
chroziel 411-53p mattebox with the rod system *side flags are $200*
Some batterys... *what ones... where can I get them*
bogen 503 head *can some one recommend some nice legs*
And also Im gonna need a Uv and mabee a polorizer.. can any one recommend filters or lens that I might need and where to get them...

*If im forgeting anything or you see something I might need please let me know... *

Thanks for all the help.

* also the only thing i can think of that I might change would be if I wanted to save $2,000 I could not get the Matte box and instead get one of those fabric matte boxes... But.... Will the chroziel matte box add a noticable difference to my picture?

Thanks again...

Re: Hardware Sugestions??

Hurm... Well thank you very much for the info, I have delt with B&H before and they are a good company, except Id like to try to get everything from one site so I dont have to worry about paying multiple shipping fees..... Saferseas sems to have alot of gear I might order from them.

Re: Hardware Sugestions??

I bought my 411-53 from Safer Seas, and if I recall correctly, the sidewings kit was like $300+ once you add the required mounting blocks kit to mount them to the mattebox.

Re: Hardware Sugestions??

Oh, I didnt know there was something extra you needed to mount them, But I emailed them about a month ago and asked for a price quote and he gave me a quote on all this other garbage I didnt need so I sent and email back and asked him if I could just have the price of the Matte box, The Ana, and the side flags... and he sent a email back and said the prices then said Side flags are an additional $200...

But you did buy it not me so your probly right and I bet he just didnt give me prices of the extra mounting stuff.

Re: Hardware Sugestions??

Just a quick thought,

Would it be wise to forget the Chroziel Matte box and take that $2,000 and invest in some lighting?

If so can you recommend specific lights or light sets, not just the brand of light but the actual model, and where I can order it from?

Thanks.

Re: Hardware Sugestions??

Here's what I did with a $2000 budget: got the Arri kit with a 650w & Chimera, 300w & 150w for about $1750 at B&H Photo. Think it was a 'D1' kit - don't recall the exact model number. Then spent $200 for the Cinetactics matte box. Arri also has a kit with a 1000w, 650w, & 300w for a little bit more, but the 650 is fine for my interviews on video. And the light control accessories that come with it: barndoors, scrims, gel-holders are great. Not bad for a total of 2000. It's fabric, but with the reinforced plastic inside it, it's quite stiff. Not the $2500 matte-box, but has me up & running with lights & protection for the lens.

Good luck with your shopping.

Re: Hardware Sugestions??

If you're looking for the most bang for the buck (on a budget), you'll definitely have to consider lighting a big factor. Pick up a lighting kit. I picked up an Arri Softbank 1 kit including a 1000 watt with Chimera softbank, two 650's, and one 300. The kit ran $2239.00 from B&H ($1100 bucks off the list price). It's a great kit and very versatile.

The Chrosziel is definitely an awesome piece of gear, and the biggest bonus it has is it's oozing sex appeal for your rig... but it's very expensive, and really only serves to shade your lens and hold filters infront of it. There are cheaper alternatives that do a great job. The cash saved on that can be used elsewhere. Just my 2 cents. Don't get me wrong, the 411-53 ROCKS, and I love mine, but if I had to choose what was more important, I'd get the basics out of the way first...

Think of it like buying a $4000 set of chrome rims for your new car, before you've even bought the car. Get the basics nailed down first. ;D

Re: Hardware Sugestions??

I didn't want to spend 6,000.00 on a 6x6 mattebox, so I bought a 6x6 filter holder, and we are making a mattebox to fit the DVX around that.

Steve, why did you settle on the 6x6? Won't a 4x4 do the job for the ana lens? which brand filter holder did you use?

thanks

Kai, great analogy regarding chrome wheels. I have to agree, for 40 bucks you can get the cinetactics superflag and velcro the sucker directly to the hood of the ana lens.

Re: Hardware Sugestions??

Steve, your right - what can I say, I have a bad case of "foot-in-mouth". I bite my tongue :P...

Regarding that $35, 6500K flood - Costco also carries a 300W version for $20 if anyone's interested. I dig it because it's a flou 300W equivalent running at only 65W (?)...It runs really cool and won't bust a circuit...

Re: Hardware Sugestions??

Here are a couple packages... which one do you recommend?

#1: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/con...ail&Q=&sku=102960&is=REG&si=acc#goto_itemInfo

#2: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=productlist&A=details&Q=&sku=225022&is=REG

#3: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/con...ail&Q=&sku=225025&is=REG&si=inc#goto_itemInfo

What do you think??

Next question... How do you plug this all up? You cant just stick this into a wall socket, What else do I need to get these running?

Say im outdoors? Am I going to need a generator? if so dont they make a crap load of noise? and Arnt they expensive?

What wires do I need with these?

Thanks for all the help.

Re: Hardware Sugestions??

id pick the middle one.. its good to have the 150 around. And you should be able to balance the load with your house power, you dont need a genny till you start striking 2000-10,000watt lights.

Re: Hardware Sugestions??

Ok, I was just reviewing costs and funds and I dont think I can grab a package like that... I know its not really that expensive but the prices are just adding up too fast...

So let me explain the type of look I want and mabee you could recommend a type of light and I will just get 2 Lights not a package of 4...

Im looking for that Martin Scorsasi style in his movies like Casino and Goodfellas ??

I know I cant get a look that great with such a small budget but at least I can head in that direction..

The question is to get a look similar to that do I want Fresnel Lights or Soft Lights?

I think what im going to do Is just purchase 2 single Lights and some Stands for them along with barndoors and such and such...

Thanks for the help.
