Hardware Freaks...

Today I went to shoot an interview alone, and just crammed trunk of my fiat (it has a trunk after you lower the passagener seats), of everything I had, just to be sure. My DVX Bag, filled with XLR Cables, A Lav mic,  a dinamic mic, a circular screw-on polarizer, my headphones, etc...

Took my cool (but large, with only 2 stages) Sachler DV2, my toolkit with  gaffer tapes, tools, lightmeter, metering tape, etc...

And since this was an uninspiring overcast day, I took my 3-light fresnel Lighting kit, with my assortment of foamcore, and gels. When I got there I just realized that I was alone and that I had to interview a 78-year old lady. I just left it all in the car, took my camera bag and shot handheld, availiable light, wired the lav to her and she gave me a tour of her hous and her work. It was awesome, intimate, the images were excellent and I met her cat pips wich is very friendly (otherwise, she'd probably attacked me in my 8 bags of gear...). Makes you wonder why the hell leave your pants for a 50Kg light kit.

I was just thinking and as much as equipment can make a shoot possible, sometimes, all you need is just "an idea in your head and a camera in your hands" (quoting Glauber Rocha - again - yes I must be the milioneth brazilian film student to do it). Better yet when it's a DVX.

EDIT - You can check the grabs in the following topic:

Re: Hardware Freaks...

Great story taubkin. Inspiration can't be bought, no matter how many Arri lighting kits you have.

Wow. I used to have a Fiat... Hats off for getting all that gear in that tiny car in the first place!

Good story.

Re: Hardware Freaks...

Sometimes all the stuff can be intimidating to people. Keeping it simple can often be the best way to go.

Re: Hardware Freaks...

I agree with the minimalist theory. Although, I sometimes take it a step further and actually hide the camera, so the "actors" don't know they're being recorded. ...It seems to work for wildlife videographers. Plus, you get some very real performances that way.

And I've only been slapped 3 times. :-[
