hardware for recording audio?

ugafan

Looking for a woman
okay, what do i need? i've read stuff about mics, shockmounts, boom poles, etc., but beyond that i'm completely lost.

should i record straight from an oktava to the dvx? a mixer? i've read about some people using motu ultralite? record from the mic to my computer? how does this all work?

if you can explain it or point me to a website, i would be greatly appreciative. thanks.

How much money do you have to spend? What are you doing (docs, commercial, industrial, education, narritive films etc.) Where does the money come from and how often. It will be hard to say.

i'm doing a micro budget independent film. i have very little to spend. i just need a quick rundown of the most basic stuff i will need and why.

micro budget?Does it mean that you dont have Tom C. IN your cast :-)
read the stickers - you have planty of info

wabbit - thanks for the link to the book. i'll have to look into getting that.

oleg - where is the sticker that i should read? i don't see the one that answers my question. do you have a link?

read them all.
but better find some one who already did sound and can analize your script / locations /shooting brake down if you have one .
that way you will know what you really need

what do you have now for cam and sound and how much can you spend min and max.

what are you locations and scenes like and how many people are talking.

My suggestion: start recording right to the DVX. You can get up to speed on a lot of the process, then figure out where you most need improvement. Don't spend a lot of money until you have a little more experience. The DVX is usable for audio in many situations, and on a tiny project/budget cutting gear to a minimum has advantages. Then, listen to what you've got, figure out if more skill or more equipment will get you where you want to be, and go for it.

You'll make wiser decisions after a few shoots...

My suggestion...start small. Get the Oktava and 30' xlr cable, read, and keep coming back here!

i have a dvx and an octava. the movie is a comedy, most of it is set indoors. i just need something to record dialougue.

you dont know how to record to your camera? Your camera is a recorder! or

you want to record secondary sound then match later in post?

ugh, man, do some reading!!! you dont know enough to even be asking questions. this site has so much info. just read!!! and THEN everyone can help you when you know the difference between an XLR and an RCA so to speak. its hard to help someone who cant even do the background research to be able to make informed decisions and ask intelligent questions.

no offense, this is just how it is.

the real question is, do you know enough to be giving answers? if you have anything useful to add, feel free...

well, sorry i was blunt, and no im not having a bad day, and yes, i have several useful things i could maybe add but you havent asked a structured question yet. (and oleg syndrome is pretty funny! maybe true, yes)

its a little vague man - have you read the old pages on the forums? have you read the stickies? have you checked out filmsound.org (theres a website for you to start) and maybe read jay roses books? what is your situation that defines the options you have? do you know the difference between single and souble system? are you planning on using only 1 mic for the entire film? do you know what the point of having a mixer is?

i'm not usually the type to write antsy answers to peoples questions. usually im pretty patient and helpful (people here will probably agree) but your initial post is not very informative of what you're looking to find out, and doesnt show that you've done some research before asking a (you'll see one day in retrospect when you learn more about sound) vague question.

i know people have to start somewhere. i've only been doing this professionally for 4 years myself. but researching and taking the time to find your own answers and put yourself in a more objective position is what makes a forum like this really powerful - not just saying "what is audio all about?". how else will you know if the information you get is even vaguely true?

most people here could write a 100 page essay in answer to your first question. it just made me a little irritated to see a question that vague being put out there and expecting an internet course in sound in return.

so again, sorry. im not a total dick. and yes, in your case (by what im guessing based on the previous posts), you're better off just going oktava into dvx and learning some lessons the only valuable way: the hard way. do as much research as you can to limit the mistakes you make, and come back and ask some more questions when you have things that you genuinely cant solve with a little on the job experience, experimentation, and research.

cheers.

If you had bothered to read any of the extremely useful sticky threads in the forum, you would find that timapter has provided numerous helpful suggestions to many folks on the forums.

I suggest you do some reading and start a new thread with a more specific question.
