Hardware Compression

Whenever I watch "Hollywood" movie trailers online I am always amazed at the quality of the video/audio considering how quickly they download. I know that they use hardware compression to achieve this great result - what I'm wondering is, are there places I can send video and have it compressed via their hardware compression system? If so, where are these places and what do they cost?

Thanks,
Larry

This is the first I've heard of hardware compression for movie trailers. You may be right, but I'm curious where you read that.

What format are you talking, by the way? WMV? Quicktime? Real Media (shudder...)?

In a month or so, Quicktime 7 should be availible (with H264) and with a decent compression program (probably will be included with FCP 5 at NAB) you should be able to get better results with that than anything currently availible.

You should be able to get results almost that good on your own, you may need to do noise reduction and you certainly can't achieve those results in quicktime pro, but there are relatively inexpensive programs which offer great results.

I know there are good programs out there (e.g. Sorensen, etc). But what I was wondering about was access to and cost for using hardware compression to get DVD quality video in small file sizes.

I don't need this now, and in the meantime do use Vegas for encoding to various formats and have used the Sorenson demo. These options work great for now.

I just mostly wondered if the cost of using a hardware compression service was more reasonable/affordable than acquiring hardware compression for in-house use.

Discreet Cleaner does a superb Job, and it comes pretty close to those you see online.

I have sorenson also, but for some reason I get better results with Cleaner
