Hardtime editing Proes 4K on a 1080p timeline

I have a decent hackingtosh built with i7 processor 32gb of RAM and 680gtx Card but when I try to edit 4K prores (BMPC) on a 1080p timeline payback is very unstable so I need to lower resolution to 1/4 to at least do something. Just wondered where is my problem? Video Card, CPU ?

4K ProRes would probably be a large file, which makes the hard drive the most likely cause of any playback issues. Nothing you do in PP will help with that.
