hard edge vs soft edge GND

what should I get, I have a soft edge GND, are the hard edge ones better for exposing the sky and not bleed into the lower portion of your shot?

Hard edge *can* work better, if it will lineup exactly with the horizon, such as a locked off shot overlooking the ocean.

I find soft ND grads are much more useful.

One technique for 'varying' the width of the grad is to use longer or shorter focal lengths according to taste.

I rent my filters, but I did buy soft Grads for a documentary I worked on. Soft grads work in more conditions, although hard grads can be good to have. You can however make hard grads more 'soft' and soft grads more 'hard' by experimenting with how close they are to the lens. They never get to the point of their counterpart, but it's a way I fine tune my results.
