Hard Drives for offloading P2

I have a dell laptop that I am going to be using to offload P2 cards in the field and then am going to be editing on a Mac. Will just any USB 2 hard drive work for this? Does the speed of the drive itself matter for this much? Will a portable drive that draws the power from the USB cable work? I just want to make sure I don't end up loosing data.
