Hard Drive tech question: Firewire to USB and back

I am backing up FCP footage from a 320gig G-RAID firewire to a 500GB myBook using USB 2.0 - here is my question: I have heard that USB 2.0 is not good for video editing because of the way it writes data onto the disk - this will not effect my backup files, though, correct? I may need to write the files back to a separate firewire drive before editing with them..so the files will be going from firewire to usb 2.0 back to firewire. Anyone think this matters? I assume it doesn't matter, but the last thing I need is to corrupt the backup footage files. The drives are all formatted mac OS extended (journaled).

Also..the GRAID is acting flakey upon startup. I booted up my G5 and powered on the drive and it did not mount. I powered everything down, swapped out the fw cable and restarted...and it then appeared on the desktop. Later I had to reboot the G5 after a software update..and the GRAID did not mount again. I put the old cable back, switched fw ports on the G5, restarted everything and it mounts! Is it about to die on me?

The flakey G-RAID certainly sounds worrisome. Though since it just happens after changing the cables, I wonder if its the firewore port on the drive. Maybe some wires or screws have come loose there?

As for the USB vs Firewire, for pure backup purposes, USB is fine. You won't run into any corruption issues beyond the normal risks of any given hard drive you buy perhaps being a lemon.

cheers.

You shouldnt have to make the drives JOURNALED unless its your system drive. For extra drives, making them journaled just slows it down a bit

Can you simply turn off journaling, or do I need to reformat it?
