Hard drive space

Hello,

I'm working on a project and have an external 2TB hard drive RAID 1 so I'm working with 1TB of space. I've imported roughly 150 gigs of video onto the hard drive and made a handful of projects and it's showing that I'm currently using almost 900 gigs of my hard drive. These are optimized videos and I know the events/projects/program take space but I was astonished to see that I was using 90% of my capacity with so little footage.

I'm posting this here because I've researched the net and the only solution I've found to free up disk space is to delete rendered files from the events and projects. I've done that and it's made no difference. Is there anything else that I can do to free up some space? Am I unnecessarily duplicating my files somehow?

I'm editing on a Macbook Pro and it is solely used for FCP X. No other programs or files are saved to this hard drive. Thanks for any help.

Give details on exactly what your settings are for importing files.
Are you keeping background rendering turned off?

Thank you for the reply.

Yes my background rendering is turned off. For importing I am uploading from an SD card, copying files to the events folder, importing folders as keywords and creating optimized media. I'm analyzing for color balance and fixing audio problems and removing silent channels. I know that pro res files are fairly big (I read 60 gigs and hour) but that still doesn't explain why I'm at capacity with only a 4-5 hours worth of footage. Unless I totally underestimated the size of a hard drive I needed.

Copy files to the event folder does just that. Creates copies of the original H.264 files. Optimizing creates ProRes copies on top of that. I would do one or the other, not both. You have 2 copies of each clip. I'd also not analyze for color balance, let FCP do that only on the clips that need it as you're working

That's what I feared. I guess I was under the impression that if you were importing from a memory card you needed to copy to the event folder because you wouldn't have the original files once the memory card was deleted. Now that I need some more space how can I safely delete each clip so I only have 1 copy of every file?

Thanks so much for your help on this.

Well, once the files are Optimized into ProRes, you don't need the originals. Or you don't need the Optimized ProRes files. Pick which ones you don't need, and in that Event folder, move either the "Original Media" or "Optimized Media" folder to the trash. Be careful if you have stills and stuff that are optimized. Yes, FCP will optimize stills, and MP3 files, too! Here's some basic information for you:
