Hello, again. I was wondering if someone can tell me what kind of space I need to store raw footage. I will explain the set-up as best I can
( I do not understand computer launguage etc) gigs mega bite etc???

I am filming with a Canon xh a1 and I would like to take the footage I shoot with each day, and back this up on a hard drive. I have a small lap-top I was just given, never been used, not sure how much space this computer has, but its just a simple Compac lap top a few years old, and I wanted to know what kind of editing gear should I purchase, or what other type of programm, and what I would need to store this footage. I will use many tapes, but lets just assume,

12 tapes or 12 hours
and 30 tapes or 30 hours.
For each senario how much space would I need, also is this proper to use a lap top for this, or must I purchase something else?

Thank you for your help

Billy

Get an external hard drive for the raw footage.

You need to decide what editor you want, every company has demos you can try out first, but look into Adobe's Premiere, Sony's Vegas, Grass Valley's Edius, and Avid's Media Composer on a PC. I don't know if your laptop will be able to edit HD, what are the specs?

And HDV footage (if not transcoded to something like Cineform) will take up 13gigs per hour. Simple math from there.
