Hard drive setup / new system

Just purchased a new system light years faster than my old crummy laptop. I also purchased cs5 and was trying to configure the hardware appropriately. I have the main drive as the 750gb and twin 1 tb drives in raid 0. After browsing around the adobe forums however, it seems like my setup is not what many are recommending. Can anybody help me figure this out? Looks like people are poopooing the caviar drives as well. Help!

Honestly you have one hell of a PC there for doing video work. The only thing I would recommend is for you to buy more hard drives and put them into raid 3. It wont be as fast as Raid 0, but if a drive dies, you won't have complete data loss.

The 2tb drives from hitachi will run about 250Megabytes per second in a 4 drive Raid 3 setup.

The only drive I would recommend to stay away from is Samsung. Our IT department here says that they have higher than normal failure rates. They recommend Hitachi for long term performance.

thanks-- i tried so hard to research these boards and others for the right setup. my last computer was bought 5 years ago and i felt clueless when ordering my new one. things have changed alot.

i want to clarify RAID 3-- i looked this up on wikipedia:

"Byte-level striping with dedicated parity.
All disk spindle rotation is synchronized, and data is striped such that each sequential byte is on a different disk. Parity is calculated across corresponding bytes on disks and stored on a dedicated parity disk. Very high data transfer rates are possible."

not too sound so ignorant, but what physical config does this translate into? i.e. how do you set this up if you get 2 more hd's? (and do they need to be the same size-- 1 tb).

thanks!

Just out of curiosity, have you checked in any way to make sure that 850w power supply will be enough? Those GTX 470's suck a lot of juice. They also run really darn hot by all accounts, so how much air flow/cooling does the case have?

i spoke with the pc company when i was selecting the components. according to them 850 should be no problem w/ a single graphics card. sli - one might need more, however. the case i picked came with a nice fan setup. 3 bigguns and not too noisy either. i can hear myself think even. i used avadirect, which seemed to be popular here on these boards.
